Steve Miller was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, though it wasn't all sunshine and roses, to coin a very old phrase.  During his induction speech, Miller urged the Hall to be more inclusive of women and to do more for music education. Then, in a press conference after the ceremony, he complained that the whole induction process was "unpleasant" and said "they need to respect the artists they say they’re honoring, which they don't." Miller was, in part, annoyed that the rest of the Steve Miller Band was not inducted along with him.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Miller at the 15 annual Bammie Awards, on March 7, 1992, 32 yearsa go today.  As mentioned in our Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir post earlier this month, the Bammies were founded in 1977 by Dennis Erokan, publisher of Bay Area Music magazine. The awards were designed to recognize the best musicians and musical performances by San Francisco area bands.

2000 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2000-03-06 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2000 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was highlighted by the inductions of Eric Clapton, Bonnie  Raitt and James Taylor, all of whom not only performed solo, but also particated in the All Star Jam to close the night. For Clapton, it was his 3rd induction, after having been recognized as a member of Cream and The Yardbirds.  Diana Ross performed God Bless The Child in honor of Billie Holiday's imduction, while Ray Charles played Nature Boy to commerate Nat King Cole. The Lovin Spoonful reunited to play 2 songs, while Patti Smith performed People Have The Power in honor of Clive Davis's induction.  The ceremony also featured the first inductions into a new category, Sidemen.

Jefferson Airplane - 1967-03-05 - New York, NY (SBD)

The Jefferson Airplane entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996, That class also included David Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground, just to name a few.  Unfortunately, Grace Slick did not attend the induction ceremony, nor did Roger Waters of Pink Floyd or Bowie.

This soundboard recording goes back to the very beginning of the Airplane's Hall Of Fame career, capturing them in New York on March 5, 1967, 57 years ago today. Just a month earlier, they releaed their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, The disc spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. Later that year, the The Airplane played at the Monterrey Pop Festival, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. The year 1967 was as one of those transcendent moments in rock history, with debut albums from Grateful Dead, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, as well the release on June 1 of what many folks believe is the greatest album of all time, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. The Airplane were an integral part of that musical revolution.

Stevie Wonder was inducted into the Rock & Roll  Hall Of Fame in 1989.  That class also included the Rolling Stones, the late great Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion. 

This soundboard recording captures Stevie at Winterland in San Francisco on March 2, 1973, 51 years ago today, right around the time he was beginning a run of singles and albums that cemented his hall of fame status. In late 1972, he released the album Talking Book, which went to #3 on the Billboard charts and in 1973, yielded two #1 singles, Superstition and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life. Over the next 4 years, Wonder would release the albums Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs In The Key of Life. The first of that trio would hit #4 on the Billboard charts, while the next 2 would both climb to #1.  All 3 would win the Grammy for Album of The Year! Those discs produced 7 top 20 singles, including 3 more #1's, You Haven't Done Nothing, I Wish and Sir Duke.

While neither Jerry Garcia nor Bob Weir have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as solo artists, both entered the institution in 1994 as part of the Grateful Dead.  Garcia did not show up for the ceremony but the rest of the band did, and brought a life size cardboard cut out of him! 

This FM broadcast captures Garcia and Weir performing an acoustic set at the 1983 Bammie Awards, held on March 2, 1983, 41 years ago today. Dennis Erokan, publisher of Bay Area Music magazine, founded the Bammies, or Bay Area Music Awards, in 1977.  They were designed to recognize the best musicians and musical performances by San Francisco area bands. The Bammies ran for about 20 years, finally fizzling out in 1997. Each year's awards ceremony was highlighted by musical performances, and would inevitably end with everyone onstage together for a free-for-all jam session.

Elvis Presley - 1974-03-01 - Tulsa OK (SBD)

Elvis Presley was part of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's inaugural induction class in 1986. What else would you expect for the man nicknamed "The King".  Also in that class were Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis - every one of them a no brainer. 

This soundboard recording captures Elvis on March 1, 1974, a half century ago today, on the first night of a tour of the South.  He would play 24 shows in 20 days, a grueling pace that did little to help a man already addicted to a host of drugs. Nor did the size of the entourage that travelled with him help his condition.  At the next stop in Houston, they took up 32 rooms at the Shamrock Hilton and another 25 at the Astroworld Hotel! All those folks wanted a piece of Elvis, further contributing to his deteriorating health.
