1982: In the early 1980’s, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, had a vision. He would bring a large scale rock and roll festival to Southern California that would unite music, television, computer technology, and people, all while addressing logistical issues such as overcrowding, traffic control, and lack of facilities that had plagued earlier festivals. Thus, the US Festivals were born. Somehow, he pulled it off twice, in September 1982 and May 1983, hosting 2 events that were each attended by hundreds of thousands of fans with minimal issues, despite 115-degree heat at the first US show. The two festivals included large air-conditioned tents featuring the US Festival Technology Exposition, a dazzling display of then-cutting edge computers, software, and electronic music devices. Bill Graham handled booking and running the concerts, which clearly contributed to their operational success. Of course, Wozniak’s deep pockets didn’t hurt, as he could afford to lose almost $20 million on the 2 festivals. At the first festival, days 1 and 2 primarily featured new wave and punk bands such as The Clash, The Police, The B52’s, The Talking Heads, Pat Benatar ands Tom Petty. Black Crowes - 1995-09-03 - Mountain View, CA (SBD) 

1995: In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their 3rd album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issued the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album, headlining the H.O.R.D.E. Festival, in Mountain View on September 3, 1995, 31 years ago today.

Bruce Hornsby - 1986-09-03 - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

1986: In August 1986, Bruce Hornsby and the Range released their debut album, The Way It Is. The band also released the title track as the first single from the album and it would become Hornsby’s biggest selling song to date. Driven by the success of the single, the album climbed to #3 on the charts! Critical acclaim accompanied the album’s chart success. Then on February 24, 1987, he capped off an incredible debut year by winning a Grammy for Best New Artist! This FM Broadcast captures him in Philadelphia on September 3, 1986, 4 decades ago today and about a month after The WAy It Is hit record stores. In addition to playing the entire album, Hornsby provided a glimpse into his future as a member of the Grateful Dead, playinb a cover of I Know You Rider.

Steely Dan - 1994-09-02 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

After an Independence Day concert in Santa Monica in 1974, Steely Dan retired from touring to focus on studio recordings. Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had tired of the grind associated with live performing and preferred to focus on song writing and album production. After producing 4 more albums (Kati Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja & Gaucho) between 1975 and 1980, Becker and Fagan announced a split in their partnership in June 1981. It would be another 12 years before the two would formally reunite, ironically, to produce 2 solo albums. Becker produced Fagan’s album Kamakiriad, while Fagan returned the favor by serving as co-producer on Becker’s 11 Tracks of Whack. Even more irony followed, as the two then reformed Steely Dan, not to record an album, but to go on tour! While their 2 solo albums didn’t sell all that well, their live concerts received rave reviews. They had such a good time on the road in 1993, they “did it again’ in 1994. This soundboard recording captures the band on September 2, 1994, 32 years ago today, in Dallas.

1989: In 1972, the Jefferson Airplane broke up, then found new life as Jefferson Starship, and later just Starship. But in 1989, 20 years after Woodtstock, for a brief moment the Jefferson Airplane flew once again. Original members Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jack Cassady, Jorma Kaukonen and Grace Slick reunited to record an album and tour. This soundboard recording captures the Airplane during that reunion tour, at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on September 2, 1989, 37 years ago today.

1996: After achieving commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980’s, Warren Zevon’s career took a host of twists and turns. He battled alcoholism and obsessive compulsive disorder. He  also served as musical coordinator and occasional guitarist for an ad-hoc rock music group called the Rock Bottom Remainders, a collection of writers performing rock and roll standards at book fairs and other events. The group included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Matt Groening and Amy Tan, just to name a few. He occasionally filled in for Paul Schaffer as bandleader for David Letterman’s Late Night Show. And he continued to release albums and tour. This soundboard recording captures him in Laytonville on September 1, 1996, 3 decades ago today, on tour in support of his 1995 album, Mutineer.

Bruce Springsteen - 1985-09-01 - East Rutherford, NJ (Ex Aud)

1985: On June 29, 1984, Bruce Springsteen launched the Born In The USA tour in support of the album of the same name, a 156 show extravaganza that ran until October 5, 1985. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the top 10 for the duration if the entire tour. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ grade, ranking it as the best disc of 1984. Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review, and would eventually rank it as #85 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. The video for Dancing In The Dark, the first single from the album, received extensive airplay on MTv which helped propel it to the #2 position on the Billboard singles charts. In all, the album would yield seven top 10 singles. The tour, which featured Nils Lofgren on guitar in place of Miami Steve Van Zandt, who had left the E-Street Band to pursue a solo career. The 1985 portion of the tour saw Springsteen visit Asia, Australia and Europe, before returning to the US to play his first American outdoor stadium shows, including 6 shows in August at Giants Stadium in his home state of New Jersey.  I had tickets for the August 30th show, but due to a tremendous rain storm that concert had to be moved until September 1.  This excellent audience recording captures that rescheduled show, which toook place 41 years ago today, a 30 song marathon that included Santa Claus Is Coming To Town to end the night! Chistmas came early for all of us at Giants Stadium that night!
