March's Theme At So Many Roads

Our theme for March here at So Many Roads is the decade of the 1970s!  Every post in March will feature a concert from 1970 to 1979!

Why the 1970s?  Well, the decade was one marked by a host of transitions in rock music. The Beatles broke up, and Elvis Presley left us way too soon. The Stones did some of their finest work early in the 1970's, only to fall prey to the excesses of the times, before rebounding near the end of the decade. Some stalwarts of the 1960s, such as the Grateful Dead and CSNY, took extended time off in the 1970s. Other Woodstock era groups underwent a metamorphosis, emerging in a new form. For example, the Jefferson Airplane became the Starship, while the Byrds broke up but reemerged as McGuinn, Clark and Hillman. Bob Dylan underwent his own series of dramatic changes, producing masterpieces such as Desire and Blood on Tracks, and disasters such as Street Legal, then converting to Christianity and recording Slow Train Coming. Led Zeppelin became the biggest band in the world, paving the way for the rise of heavy metal. New genres of rock emerged, such as punk, new wave, progressive rock and glam rock. Bruce Springsteen brought the Jersey Rock scene to national prominence. Singer/song writers such as Billy Joel, Elton John and James Taylor took center stage on the rock scene. Artists such as Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles created a highly polished sound that would come to be known as album oriented rock. Multi-platinum mega albums, such as Frampton Comes Alive, Hotel California and Rumours ruled the charts. And everybody seemed to play live at Budokan. Such were the 1970's, and you'll get a taste of all of it in March here at So Many Roads!

Enjoy the tunz!

Our last post this month not only keeps with our theme of concerts from Asia, Australia, Africa and South America, but also marks our first to feature The Kinks. While the Kinks originally came to prominence in the mid 1960s; around the time of "The British Invasion" led by The Beatles and The Stones, the band experienced a second wave of popularity in the late 1970s; and early 1980s. The band's 1977 album Sleepwalker climbed to #21 on the Billboard chart in the US, with the title track and the tune Juke Box Music becoming staples on FM radio.  Around the same time, new wave acts such as The Pretenders and The Jam recorded covers of Stop Your Sobbing and David Watts, bringing the Kink's music to a whole new audience. A cover by Van Halen of You Really Got Me also sparked renewed interest in the Kink's music. Then in 1979, The Kink's released the album Low Budget, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts.  Their next album Give The People What They want, released in late 1981, went to #15 on the Billboard charts, continuing the band's string of chart success.  The Kinks launched a world tour in early 1982 in support of that album, including this concert in Tokyo on February 27, 1982, 31 years ago today.  Download this one to hear The Kink's at the height of their 2nd wave of commercial popularity! One note - the artwork shows additional tracks on disc 2 which are not included here as they have been officially released.

Eric Clapton - 2009-02-25 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

On February 12, 2009, Eric Clapton launched his winter tour of Japan and Australia, which would run through Match 10, While EC had not released an album since The Road to Escondido in 2006, which featured JJ Cale, he had toured relentlessly each year, including several shows in 2008 with former Blind Faith band mate, Steve Winwood. As mentioned in other posts, EC always seemed most comfortable when he shared the spotlight with someone else, or had another talented musician on hand to push him. For this tour, EC brought along the immensely talented Doyle Bramhall II to be the 2nd guitarist. He also had Abe Laboriel, Jr. on drums for theis tour. Laboriel is best know for being the drummer for Paul McCartney since 2001. This soundboard captures EC on February 25, 2009, 4 years ago today, in Tokyo. Download this one to hear Clapton, with help from his talented supporting cast, reach back to play some Dominos' favorites, including Tell The Truth and Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, as well as some surprises such as Isn't It A Pity, That's Alright and Everything's Gonna Be Alright.

As the Beatles moved toward break up in late 1969/early 1970, The Rolling Stones leaped into the void created by the departure of their "rivals". Between December 1969 and May 1972, the Stones released 3 of their greatest albums, all of which hit number 1 on the charts -- Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and their 2 disc masterpiece, Exile on Main Street. While the death of Brian Jones rocked the band, it clearly did not halt their musical creativity. In late 1972, the Stones went back into the studio, on the island of Jamaica, to begin work on their next album, Goat's Head Soup. The band took a break from recording in January 1973 to launch a tour of New Zealand and Australia. Amazingly, soundboard recordings exist of the last 3 nights of the tour. The bootleg Black Strap Jacket captures the February 24 show in Perth and the February 27 show in Sydney. Another bootleg, Rock and Roll Stew, features the middle of the 3 nights, February 26, also in Sydney. I'll post all 3, over the next few days, starting with the February 24, 1973 show, which took place 4 decades ago today. You'll want all of these as they capture the Stones at a peak moment in their history, with Mick Taylor on guitar, before drug issues, band tensions, and celebrity excess set in and overwhelmed the band for several years.
