Bruce Springsteen - 1978-08-04 - Charleston, WV (SBD)

On May 23, 1978, Bruce Springsteen launched a 115 show tour that would last through the end of the year in support of his new album, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, which was released on June 2. Darkness was Springsteen’s first disc since Born To Run In 1975; the 3 years wait the result of a legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel. All 10 songs from the album found their way into the Bruce’s set list at some point during the tour, with Badlands taking the prominent role of show opener. Perhaps the long wait for the album had increased the level of emotion among Bruce’s loyal fans, as the shows on this tour are often described as intense. Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh wrote, for example, “The screaming intensity of those '78 shows are part of rock and roll legend in the same way as Dylan's 1966 shows with the Band, the Rolling Stones' tours of 1969 and 1972, and the Who's Tommy tour of 1969: benchmarks of an era.” This soundboard recording captures Bruce on August 4, 1978, 35 years ago today. In the face of the British Invasion of 1964, highlighted by the Beatle’s appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in February of the year, The Beach Boys were seen as bastion of American music holding strong against the newcomers from across the pond. In May, the band released the single, I Get Around, which became their first number 1 single, displacing World Without Love which though sung by Peter & Gordon, had been written by Paul McCartney. The rivalry between the Beatles and Beach Boys, some real, some press created, would continue for the next few years, and in the end, would have a devastating impact on Brian Wilson. This soundboard captures the Beach Boys on August 1, 1964, 49 years ago today, in Sacramento, soon after I Get Around reached the top of the charts.

Elvis Presley - 1969-08-01 - Las Vegas, NV (SBD)

In early 1969, buoyed by the success of his December 1968 televised comeback special, Elvis Presley was ready to make a return to live performing. His manager, Colonel Tom Parket booked Elvis at the then new International Hotel in Las Vegas, which boasted the largest showroom in the city, for 57 shows spread over four weeks beginning July 31, 1969. Since his normal backing band, the Jordanaires, declined to participate, afraid of losing the lucrative session work they had in Nashville. Presley assembled an entire new group of backing musicians, led by guitarist James Burton and including two gospel groups, The Imperials and Sweet Inspirations. The King was nervous, however, as these would be his first series of live shows since 1961, and his first in Las Vegas since a disastrous 1956 engagement. All nerves vanished when Presley took the stage on July 31, 1969 for his 1st Vegas show as the audience of 2,200, including many celebrities, gave him a standing ovation before he even sang a note. Presley was spellbinding, so much so that the next day, Parker was able to negotiate a 5 year deal with The International for Elvis to play each February and August, at a then unheard of annual salary of $1 million. While I couldn’t find a recording of that historic 1st night in Las Vegas, I do have the soundboard recording from night #2, August 1, 1969, 44 years ago today. Paul Simon & Bob Dylan - 1999-07-30 - Wantagh, NY (SBD)

As the 20th century drew to a close, two rock legends, both born in 1941, each of whom started as folk rockers and evolved their sound in a variety of directions, whose music spanned 4 decades from the 1960’s to the 1990s, united for a 38 show tour of the US. Each night, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon would perform a solo set of music, bridged by a 4 or 5 song set where the iconic duo shared the stage together. Their duet usually produced the highlight of the evening, as the two teamed on Sounds of Silence, with Dylan filling the role once played by Art Garfunkel. This soundboard recording captures Dylan and Simon on the next to last night of the opening leg of their tour, on July 30, 1999, 14 years ago today. Download this one to hear 2 legends, alone and together, remind us why their music, to borrow from Dylan’s closing tune, will “not fade way.”

As legend goes, Steve Winwood reformed Traffic in 1994 after a Dead Head left a message for Bob Weir suggesting that if would be “cool” if The Dead and Traffic toured together! I’m not quite sure how true that is, but Traffic did come back together in 1994, and they were the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s summer tour! This soundboard recording captures Traffic during that summer tour  on July 29, 1994, 19 years ago today.
