Santana - 1978-02-09 - The Palladium, NY (Early Show) (SBD)

Earlier this month, we brought you the first part of a 1981 Same Tour Different Show entry from Santana (the 2nd part will be posted on February 21), which was near the end of Santana's transition to a more AOR sound.  Over the next 2 days, we'll bring you 4 shows from 1978, right before that start of that transition.  The first true AOR album from Carlos, entitled Inner Secrets, would be released in October 1978.  The Moonflower disc, however, which had been released in late 1978, despite its fusion of styles, may have hinted at the forthcoming change with the inclusion of a remake of the Zombies hit, She's Not There.  Inner Secrets and the albums which followed in the late 1970s and early 1980s sounded far more like She's Not There than the earlier Latin infused tunes of earlier Santana discs.  This soundboard  recording captures the early show from The Palladium in New York from February 9, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today. Just as Santana's music was changing at this time, so was the day and ago of performers playing 2 shows in one night.  By the early 1980s, that practice would be all be dead.  In any event, download this one now, then come back later today for the late show from February 9th and tomorrow for both shows from February 10.

Elvis Costello - 1978-02-07 - Berkeley CA (FM)

When Elvis Costello burst on the scene in the late 1970’s, he quickly too his place as one of the 3 Angry Men of rock, along with Graham Parker and Joe Jackson. His first 2 albums, My Aim Is True and This Year’s Model, may be one of the best 1, 2 punches ever thrown by a new artist. Both albums, which were produced by Nick Lowe of Rockpile fame, cracked the top 40 on the Billboard album charts, and received extensive critical praise. In 2003, Rolling Stone included My Aim is True and This Year’s Model in their list of the Top 500 albums of all time, with the former ranked #168 and the latter at #98. Elvis toured relentlessly in early 1978 in support of both albums, for the most part playing small clubs and college campuses. Eric Clapton - 1983-02-06 - Sacramento CA (SBD)

Our 1st of two Eric Clapton Same Tour, Different show entries this month captures EC on tour in 1983, a tour few envisioned happening given Slowhand's physical and emotional state a year earlier. In January 1982, EC, having finally admitted he was an alcoholic, flew from London to Minneapolis to check into the Hazelden Treatment Center. On the flight, Clapton drank heavily out of fear he would never be able to drink again. Clapton is quoted in his autobiography as saying, "In the lowest moments of my life, the only reason I didn't commit suicide was that I knew I wouldn't be able to drink any more if I was dead. It was the only thing I thought was worth living for, and the idea that people were about to try and remove me from alcohol was so terrible that I drank and drank and drank, and they had to practically carry me into the clinic.” After being discharged, the doctors at Hazelden recommended that EC avoid any activities that would act as a trigger for his alcoholism. A few months after his discharge, Clapton began working on his next album, against the Hazelden doctors' orders. Working with Tom Dowd, Clapton produced the disc Money & Cigarettes, which he released in February 1983. The album’s memorable cover depicts Clapton, cigarette in hand, standing next to a melting Fender Stratocaster guitar. EC said he chose the album title and imagery "because, that's all I saw myself having left”. Despite less than stellar reviews for the album, the single I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart went to # 18 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard captures EC on the 4th night of the tour in Sacremento CA on February 6, 1983, 31 years ago today.
