Creedence Clearwater Revival - 1970-04-14 - London, UK (SBD)

Brothers Tom & John Fogery were born in  Berkeley, CA.  They met Stu Cook and Doug Clifford when John was attending Portola Junior High School in El Cerrito, California. The foursome, who dubbed themselves Creedence Clearwater Revival,  were part of the burgeoning San Francisco music scene in the mid 1960's, but their sound had more of a southern feel to it.  Rather than psychedelic rock, they played what will forever be know as swamp rock.  They released their debut album on 1968, and very quickly achieved critical and commercial success.  In fact, as 1969 closed, CCR was at the top of the rock world. They were named best American band by Rolling Stone and the top selling singles artist by Billboard. They started 1970 right where they off the year before, releasing the double-sided single, Travelin' Band/"Who'll Stop the Rain, which rose to #2 on the Billboard charts (Creedence would have 5 songs go to number 2, the most ever for an artist that never topped the charts!). The band launched their first European tour in April, playing in 6 countries between April 11 and April 24. This soundboard recording captures the band during that tour on April 14, 1970, 42 tears ago today, at the Royal Albert Hall in London. According to most web sources, CCR wrote the songs Up Around The Bend and Run through The Jungle right before they left for this tour so that they would have some new, exciting material for their European audiences. The double sided single was released while they were overseas, reaching #4 on the US charts and climbing to #3 in the UK. Those 2 songs, however, are not included in this recording, which leads me to wonder if perhaps this is an incomplete show. Within or without those tunes, however, this is Creeedence at their peak and a show essential for your collection.

As we continue our “We’re An American Band (North American, That Is)” them this month, we turn our attention to the north to the world’s second largest country by area. Four Canadians, joined by one American, originally started out as backing group for Ronnie Hawkins, and later for Bob Dylan. When they finally went out on their own in 1968, they chose to call themselves simply, The Band. This soundboard reo=cording captures them near the end of their fabled career, on April 14, 1996, 18 years ago today in West Virginia. Though down to just 3 of the original 5 members (Robbie Robertson choose not to rejoin former bandmates when they reformed in 1983 and Richard Manuel tragically committed suicide in 1986), The Band, now composed on Garth Hudson, Rick Danko and Levon Helm, could still deliver rock rooted deep in the traditions of folk and Americana that had helped them earn their place in the Rock Hall of Fame just 2 years earlier.

Linda Ronstadt - 1975-04-13 - Berkeley, CA (FM)

Born in Tuscon, AZ in 1946, Linda Ronstadt would become one of the leading lights of the emerging folk rock movement in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Along with the Eagles, who actually backed he on 1972 self titled album, she would help define the LA sound of the the 1970s.  She would go on to become the Queen of Rock & Roll, one of the first, if not the first,female rocker to sell out arena size venues. Beginning with 1974's Heart Like A Wheel, Ronstadt would place 6 consectutive albums in teh Billboard top 5, three of which would climb all the way to #1.  This FM broadcast captures Miss Linda on April 13, 1975 in Berkeley CA, 39 years ago today.  Heart Like A Wheel had been released just 6 months prior, in November 1974, and Ronstadt was just beginning her ascent to the exalted position of First Lady or Rock.

Lou Reed - 1989-04-13 - Denver, CO (FM)

The late great Lou Reed was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1942. His first band, the Velvet Underground, emerged from New York’s Lower East Side in 1966 and paved the way for generations of punk, avant garde, new wave and indie rock and roll artists. Maybe it’s no coincidence, then that 10 years later, that same Lower East Side housed CBGBs, the legendary bar where artists such as The Ramones launched the punk rock movement. This soundboard recording captures Reed on April 13, 1989, a quarter century ago today, in Denver CO. Reed was on tour in support of his 15th studio album, a disc which had just helped revive his career after a slump earlier in the decade. The first 5 songs in this set list are all from that album, a disc fittingly titled New York.

Steve Miller - 1975-04-12 - Beacon, Theater, NY (SBD) 

Steve Miller was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1943. His parents were friends with guitar legend Les Paul, who encouraged young Steve’s interest in music. Miller later spent time in dallas, Chicago and New York, honing his guitar skills. By 1966, however, he had found his way to San Francisco, and became part of the twin music and cultural revolutions that emerged from the City By The Bay. Miller originally played the blues, but by 1973, his music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. His tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money and run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot. This soundboard captures Miller about a year before the release of Fly Like An Eagle, on April 11, 1975, 39 years ago today, at the Beacon Theater in New York. The set includes two of the soon to be 3 big hits from that album, but ironically doesn’t include Rock’n Me, the tune that would go to #1.

Loggins & Messina - 1972-04-10 - Cincinnati, OH (SBD)

Kenny Loggins was born in Everett, Washington, spent time in Seattle and Detroit as a child, before his family finally settled in California. Jim Messina was born in California, spent time in Texas, after his parents divorced, but eventually found his way back to his native state. Messina, formerly of Poco and Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Loggins, a little-known singer/songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - in terms of songwriting, arrangement, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. After the release of the duo’s first album in November 1971, Loggins and Messina found themselves on tour in spring of 1972. This soundboard recording from April 10, 1972, captures one of America's most successful rock duos - they would sell over 16 million records before they broke up in 1976 - at the onset of their partnership.
