JGB 1977 #1: On June 7, 8 and 9, 1977, The Grateful Dead capped their near perfect spring tour, truly one of the peak periods in the band's long strange trip, with 3 majestic performances at Winterland in San Francisco. Less than 2 weeks later, the band had to put their tour plans for the summer on hold when Mickey Hart was involved in a car crash in which he broke multiple bones. Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia used that time off to begin work on solo albums, Heaven Help the Fool and Cats Under the Stars, respectively, which would be released in 1978. Garcia took to the road as well, playing about 20 concerts in New York, New Jersey and California between July 1 and August 12. This soundboard recording captures the Jerry Garcia Band's 2nd set on August 6, 1977, 38 years ago today, at the Keystone in Berkeley, one of their favorite venues. Jerry picks up right where the Dead left off, continuing to play as well and as inspired as at any point in his career. Less than a month later, I would see the Grateful Dead for the first time, for the band's first show since Mickey's accident, the legendary Englishtown NJ concert in front of a crowd of close to 150,000!  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part of this doubel shot.

Eric Clapton 1974 #1: The year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to number 1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. This soundboard recording captures Slowhand during that famed comeback tour, on August 1, 1974, 41  years ago today, in Atlanta with some help from Keith Moon and Peter Townshend of The Who. Listen carefully and you’ll notice Slowhand sounds a bit sloshed, as a new demon had replaced his addiction to heroin, namely a growing dependency on alcohol.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of the Double Short of EC in 1974.
