I only saw The Bangles live once, on Pier 46 in New York on August 4, 1986, right at the height of commercial success. Their album, Different Light. reached #2 on the Billboard Charts, and spawned 4 top 40 singles, including Manic Monday, which went to #2 in April, and Walk Like An Egyptian, which climbed to the top of the charts for 4 weeks in December. 

This FM broadcast captures the band 2 nights after I saw them at a special concert for MS in New York,, on August 6, 1986, 3 decades ago this very day!

Billy Joel - 1987-08-02 - Leningrad, USSR (FM)

Of all of Billy Joel's albums, my two favorites are two of his earliest, Piano Man and Turnstiles. His breakthrough album, The Stranger, didn't do much for me, and his first #1 disc, 52nd Street, is on my list of albums I never want to hear again. That disc came out when I was in college and so many people were playing it constantly that I just couldn't take it any more. So, given those facts, why have I seen Billy Joel in concert on 6 occasions? Well, back in 1990 I met a girl. And we went out on a few dates. And she had tickets to see Billy, her favorite artist, at Yankee Stadium. And she invited me to go. And two years later we were married! And marrying her has been the best thing I've ever done in my life.! So, whenever she wants to see Billy Joel, I gladly get the tickets. We've seen him 3 more times since, in 2006, 2008, and just a month ago in July 2014.

In summer of 1987, several years before the dissolution of the USSR, Billy Joel ventured behind the Iron Curtain for a series of 6 concerts, 3 in Moscow and 3 in Leningrad. The shows were a challenge, not only because much of the audience did not speak English, but also because of the stringent Soviet security, According to Joel, each time the fans were hit with the bright lights, anybody who seemed to be enjoying themselves froze. In addition, people who were "overreacting" were removed by security. Joel lost over $1 million of his own money on these shows, but felt that the effort to bridge the 2 cultures made the investment worthwhile. This FM broadcast captures the next to last night of the tour, in Leningrad on August 2, 1987, 27 years ago today.
