Now, if the 1970's were the pinnacle of Elton John's commercial and artistic success, then the 1980's were the low point. While he still had several successful singles in that decade, such as I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues, Sad Songs and I Don't Wanna Go On with You Like That (all which made the Billboard Top 5, though none climbed all the way to number 1), not one of his albums could crack the top 10. His 1982 disc, Jump Up, perfectly symbolized the decade. On the one hand, two singles from the album, Blue Eyes, and Empty Garden (his tribute to the late John Lennon), both cracked the top 15 on the charts. On the other hand, lyricist Bernie Taupin called Jump Up "one of our worst albums," adding "its a terrible, awful, disposable album, but it had Empty Garden on it, so it's worth it for that one song." While Elton's studio work was a bit hit or miss, he could still put on a good as live show as anyone in the business. He toured extensively in support of Jump Up, playing 115 concerts in 1982 in Australia, Europe and North America. This FM broadcast from July 7, 1982, 3 dozen years ago today, captures Elton in Kansas City, about 1/2 way through his tour. The show was broadcast across the U.S., and while Elton was in the heart of the Midwest, he made sure to thank the radio station I grew up with, WNEW-FM, New York! 

Requests For Reposts: A Reminder

Over the last two days, I have received several requests for reports where the requester picks a band, lists every dead link and asks for them all to be re-upped.  While I fully understand folks wanting the music (if they didn't this blog wouldn't have lasted almost 9 years), as I have mentioned several times in the past, I simply do not have the time to handle that kind of request.  Ask for one or two shows, and I'l be glad o help.  But mass requests like that are simply going to be deleted and ignored.

Just a reminder - here's our policy on re-posts: 

• If there's a show you would like me to re-post, and you ask using common courtesy, I'll do my best to get to it in 48 to 72 hours. 
• If you are asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. Just not enough time in the day and I do have a wife, kids, job, etc.
• If you are rude in your request, you're getting no response
• Also, I will no longer take re-post requests from Anonymous users. Most of the time, the issues outlined above are caused by folks who are Anonymous, so unless you have some kind of identity (such as Speedy, or Wolfclan or AZ Jones, or PigStreet, etc), I won't be honoring the request. Having an identify enables me to determine who is a frequent visitor to So Many Roads and such folks will get priority when it comes to requests for reposts! 

I know that these policies may be disappointing, but its the reality of the situation as there's simply not enough hours in the day to get to everything. Thanks for understanding.

Joan Osborne with the Holmes Brothers - 2014-07-06 - Portland, OR (FM)

For those of you unfamiliar with The Holmes Brothers, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk."  I saw them dozens of times in small clubs in New York City in the late 1980s and was always amazed by their version of The Beatles tune “And I Love Her”,  as they totally reworked it and made it their own. This soundboard recording captures The Holmes Brothers in Portland on July 6, 2014, just 4 years ago today, backing Joan Osbourne.

Johnny Cash - 2003-07-05 - Hiltons, VA (SBD)

On May 15, 2003, Johnny Cash lost his wife of 35 years, when June Carter Cash passed away at the age of 73. June had told Johnny Cash to keep working, so he continued to record, completing 60 more songs in the last four months of his life, and even performed a couple of surprise shows at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia. This soundboard recording captures his final public performance on July 5, 2003,  15 years ago this very day.

Before singing Ring Of Fire, Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written shortly before taking the stage: “The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her. We connect somewhere between here and heaven. She came down for a short visit, I guess, from heaven to visit with me tonight to give me courage and inspiration like she always has.”

Just over 2 months later, Cash died of complications from diabetes on September 12, 2003 while hospitalized at Baptist Hospital in Nashville. Many have suggested that Johnny’s health worsened due to a broken heart over June’s death. That day we lost a legend, but his spirit lives in the music he left behind.

Jimmy Buffett - 1980-07-04 - Minneapolis, MN (FM)

As the decade of the 1970’s came to a close, Jimmy Buffett became an “overnight sensation”. His 1977 album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, became his first album to go gold, eventually reaching platinum status and climbing to #12 on the Billboard charts. The single, Margaritaville, went all the way to #8 on the charts. He followed that success with the album, Son Of A Son Of A Sailor in 1978, which cracked the Billboard Top 10. The single Cheeseburger In Paradise made the Billboard top 40, peaking at #32. Then in 1979, he released Volcano, which went to #14 on the billboard charts and spawned the single Fins, which cracked the top 40. Of course, like most “overnight sensations”, Buffett had paid plenty of dues along the ways. The 3 disc discussed here were actually the 7th, 8th and 9th stuio albums of his career, He had released more than 15 singles before Margaritaville made him as household name. This FM broadcast captures Buffett riding his late 1970s success into the  1980s, touring in support of  Volcano on July 4, 1980, 4 dcades ago today.

The Who - 2000-07-03 - Mansfield, MA (ALD)

After playing 7 shows in late 1999 that highlighted material from Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse project, the band decided to embark on a full scale tour in 2000. By the way, the Lifehouse project was originally intended as a rock opera that would follow Tommy, but instead morphed into Who’s Next, one of the greatest albums in rock history. That said, Townshend continually revisited material from the Lifehouse project throughout his career, including during the 1999-2000 tours. In addition to original members Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the band included Zack Starkey on drums and John Bundrick on keyboards. The Who played 38 dates, beginning on June 6 in New York, and concluding on November 27 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This ALD recording captures the band early in the tour, on July 3, 2000, 18 years ago today, in Mansfield, MA.

Los Lobos - 1996-07-02 - Cuyahoga Falls, OH (SBD)

When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, Hot Tuna. former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, and Los Lobos, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Los Lobo's set at the Further Festival on July 3, 1996, 22 years ago today.
