Woodstock 1969 Celebration - Please Read This

Starting later today, we'll bring you 4 days of music from the original Woodstock festival, held August 15 to 18, 1969. It is a 30 CD extravaganza, pieced together from numerous sources by the folks at the Woodstock Project. All thanks go to them. This is not, by the way, the 38 CD limited edition set (I think just 1969 copies were produced) from Rhino that was recently released.

That said, what I'm about to post does include some official material, but its impossible to really cull that out. While we don't usually post anything official here at So Many Roads, we will make an exception in this case but we are taking the following precautions as a result:

Rolling Stones - 1994-08-14 - East Rutherford, NJ (SBD)

Festival organizers invited the Rolling Stones to play Woodstock, but the band declined.  At the time, Mick Jagger was in Australia filling the movie, Ned Kelly, while Keith Richards was staying to close to then girlfriend Anita Pallenberg, who had just given birth to their son. Marlon.

This soundboard recording captures The Stones a quarter century after Woodstock, in East Rutherford on August 14, 1994, 25 years ago today.

The Who - 2017-08-13 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

The Who were one of the few English bands to play Woodstock, but their set is the stuff of legends.  The band didn't take the stage until 5 am Sunday morning due to all the rain delays and equipment issues. Their 25 song set featured the rock opera Tommy, followed by Summertime Blues, Shakin All Over, My Generation and Naked Eye. While the band was playing We're Not Going to Take It, the sunrise occurred at precisely at the most dramatic moment in the song. The band was so pleased at the aesthetic effect of this coincidence that they arranged special lighting at future concerts to try nd mimic it. During their performance, Peter Townsend had a run in with activist Abbie Hoffman. Hoffman went on stage between songs, grabbed a mic, and began ranting about the recent arrest of radical John Sinclair. Townshend, none too happy that Hoffman had violated what he called the sanctity of the stage, swung his guitar at Hoffman and kicked him off the stage.

This FM broadcast captures The Who 4 dozen years later, in San Francisco, on April 13, 2017, just 2 years ago this very day!

Neil Young  - 2000-08-12 - Mansfield MA (ALD)

Neil Young played at Woodstock as part of CSNY's 3rd show as a band! That said, Neil didn't appear in the Woodstock documentary film because, well, he just didn't like cameras. As he told Howard Stern in an interview "I didn’t like the f***ing cameras, they didn’t have to be on stage. They’re cameras. ‘Hello! Use your zoom, d***head!” When Stern asked if he regretted the decision all these years later, Young responded, “Who cares? It doesn’t matter, I was there, I saw it. Who gives a shit? I couldn’t care less.”  Guess for Neil, Woodstock isn't quite the historic memory and cultural milestone that others picture.

In any event, This ALD recording captures Neil some 3 decades Woodstock, in Mansfield on August 12, 2000, 19 years ago today.

John Fogerty - 2011-08-11 -  Sturgis, SD (SBD)

John Fogerty, of course, played Woodstock as the front man for Creedence Clearwater Revival, though you might never know that if you just listened to the original soundtrack or watched the first releases of the documentary film.  Creedenece doesn't appear in either, CCR didn't take the stage until well after midnight, after a long set by the Grateful Dead that was plagued by equipment issues and some ""over indulgence by the band.  By that time, the crowd was weary while the sound issues and technical problems continued.  Fogerty was unhappy with the situation and CCR'ss performance, so he barred the use of any of their set from either the original movie or soundtrack.

This soundboard recording captures Fogerty out solo over 4 decades after Woodstock, in Sturgis on August 11, 2011, 8 years ago today.

The Kinks - 1979-08-10 - Detroit, MI (SBD)

Whether or not the Kinks were invited to play Woodstock is a subject for debate. Some sources claim they ere, but declined the invitation for unspecified reasons. Other sources claim that the festival organizers didn't bother to invite them, knowing that the the band was still dealing with issues getting visas to play in the US.  The Kinks had been having been banned since 1965 from performing in the US by the American Federation Of Musicians due their rowdy, drunken, and violent behavior while on tour in the States that year.

In any event, this soundboard recording captures The Kinks in Detroit, a decade after Woodstock, and 40 years ago today, on April 10, 1979.

John Sebastian - 2017-08-10 - Philadelphia PA (HQ Aud)

John Sebastian wasn't scheduled to perform at Woodstock, but he went to the festival as a spectator.  When rain played havoc with the schedule, and staging however, the festival organizers asked Sebastian to perform an acoustic set while they cleared water off the stage in order to set up the amps for Santana. Sebastian's Woodstock set consisted of 3 songs from his recorded but not yet released John B. Sebastian album (How Have You Been, I Had A Drea, and "Rainbows All Over Your Blues) and 2 Lovin' Spoonful songs (Darling Be Home Soon and "Younger Generation). Sebastian appeared on the original Woodstock album and in the documentary film. Twenty-five years later, he returned for Woodstock '94, playing harmonica for Crosby, Stills and Nash and appearing with his own band.

This high quality incidence recording captures Sebastian just 2 years ago today (and 4 dozen years after his impromptu Woodstock performance) in Philadelphia on August 10, 2017.
