Grateful Dead - 1973- #1: As long time readers of this blog know, I've made my case for why 1977 was the band's finest year of their band's "long strange trip." That said, 1973 (and 1974) is most certainly are in the running for that title.  This soundboard recording capture's The Dead's recording opening concert from 1973, from Stanford University in Palo Alto on February 15, 1973, 47 years ago today.  This show features the first live performances of  Row Jimmy, Loose Lucy, Here Comes Sunshine, They Love Each Other, Eyes Of The World, China Doll, and Wave That Flag, the last tune being an early version of US Blues.  Download this one now then come back on February 15, 17, 21 and 22 for the next 4 parts of this entry from 1973.

Warren Zevon - 1994-02-07 - Syracuse, NY (SBD)

Warren Zevon 1994: - #1: After achieving commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980’s, Waren Zevon’s career took a host of twists and turns. He battled alcoholism and obsessive compulsive disorder. He Zevon also served as musical coordinator and occasional guitarist for an ad-hoc rock music group called the Rock Bottom Remainders, a collection of writers performing rock and roll standards at book fairs and other events. The group included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Matt Groening and Amy Tan, just to name a few. He occasionally filled in for Paul Schaffer as bandleader for David Letterman’s Late Night Show. And of course, he released albums and continued to tour. This soundboard recording captures Zevon in Syracuse on February 7, 1994, 26 years ago today. Of course, less than 10 years later, on September 7, 2003, we’d lose Warren at the all to young age of 56, due to cancer, but not before he left us with a stunning farewell album, entitled The Wind, which featured guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, David Lindley, Emmylou Harris and Tom Petty, just to name a few. Months after his death, Zevon would win 2 Grammys for the album, the only ones of his legendary 30 year career. Download this one, then stop back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this set.

Bobby & The Midnites - 1982 - #2: As promised yesterday, here’s the 2nd part of our Bobby & The Midnites Same Tour, Different Show entry, an FM Broadcast of their show from the Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead NY on February 6, 1982, 38 years ago today.  An interesting note - Weir and the Midnites played both these venues again in June 1982, taking the stage at the Capital on June 12 and the Calderon on June 15, though I’ve yet to uncover tapes of either of those spring shows.

Bobby & The Midnites - 1982-02-05 - Capital Theatre, NJ (FM)

Bobby & The Midnites - 1982 - #1: Bob Weir’s solo efforts have included successful stints with Kingfish along with a wonderful pairing with bassist Rob Wasserman in Ratdog. A somewhat unusual chapter, however, was written in the early 1980s when he fronted Bobby & The Midnites. The Midnites originally included Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead on keyboards, Matthew Kelly from Kingfish on guitar, Bobby Cochran from Steppenwolf on guitar, Tim Bogert from the Vanilla Fudge on bass and Billy Cobham, who had played with Miles Davis, on drums. Despite the star studded lineup, their self titled debut album made little commercial or critical impact. In 1982, Kelly, Mydland and Bogert left the band. Weir recruited Alphonso Johnson of Weather Report to take over on bass and added Dave Garland on keyboards. That lineup lasted until March 1983, including this show at the Capital Theatre in Passaic NY, on February 5, 1982, 38 years ago today. The Bangles - 1986 - #1: After gaining some recognition in 1984 with their debut album, All Over The Place, The Bangles found themselves on top of the rock world in 1986 after the release of their second disc, Different Light. The album reached number two on the Billboard Charts, and spawned four top 40 singles, including Manic Monday, which went to #2 in April, and Walk Like An Egyptian, which climbed to the top of the charts for 4 weeks in December. The band also received extensive airplay on MTV, furthering their popularity. The ride at the top would only last another 2 years, but it was fun while it lasted. This excellent audience recording captures The Bangles at their peak, during a European Tour, in Bristol on February 4, 1986, 34 years ago today.
