1973 - In July 1973, Lou Reed released the concept album Berlin, which tells the tale of a couple, Jim and Caroline, and their struggle with drug addiction and abuse. The album was initially a commercial and critical disaster, though over the years opinions have changed, with Rolling Stone even ranking it at #334 on its list of the greatest albums of all time. This soundboard recording captures Lou on tour in support of Berlin, in Providence on December 14, 1973,  48 years ago today.

Unfortunately, deatils on the tour are sketchy and sometimes contradictory. In any event, this soundboard recording captures part of the band's performance in Chicago, on December 14, 1969, 52 years ago today.

1969 - On April 28, 1969, Chicago released their debut album, its title taken from the band's name at the time, Chicago Transit Authority. The double disc, which included several tunes which would become classic such as Does Anybody Really Know What Time  It Is? and Beginnings, set a then record by staying on the Billboard charts for 171 weeks, peaking at #17. Based on the strength of the album, the band would receive a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.  This TV broadcast captures Chicago on tour in support of its debut effort, in Amsterdam on December 12, 1969, 52 years ago today.

1975 - After the break up on Simon & Garfunkel in 1970, Paul Simon embarked on a solo career and found instant success. His self titled album, released in 1972, went to#4 on the billboard charts and spawned the hits singles Mother & Child Reunion and Me &Julio Down By The School Yard. The next year, he released the album There Goes Rhymin' Simon which went to #2 on the Billboard charts, as did the singles Kodachrome and Loves Me Like A Rock. Then in October 1975, he released the disc Still Crazy After All These Years which would become his only solo #1 album, and yield his only solo #1 single, 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.  During a brief tour of Europe in December 1975, in support of his latest album, Simon's solo success took a back seat to a one night only reunion.  As captured in this FM broadcast, on December 11, 1975, 46 years ago today, Art Garfunkel joined Simon on stage in London for 4 songs.  rekindling hopes for a reunion.  The two had reconciled to some degree earlier that year, with Garfunkel collaborating with Simon on the tune My Little Town.  Despite that, it would take 7 years, until 1982, before the duo would reunite for a tour, only to have  the old wounds re-emerge and drive them apart again,

1969 - As discussed in several earlier posts here at So Many Roads, Eric Clapton quickly grew tired on being in Blind Faith. During that band's only tour in 1969, EC found himself spending more time with opening act Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett than he was with Winwood and Baker! Once the tour ended, EC left Blind Faith and joined up with Delaney & Bonnie. This soundboard recording finds EC on tour with Delaney & Bonnie on December 10, 1969, 52 years ago today! Also on stage is Clapton's good friend, George Harrison!

1966 - Eric Clapton - Guitar. Jack Bruce - Bass. Ginger Baker - Drums. The "cream" of the crop of jazz and blues musicians in the London music scene pooled their talents in 1966, to create rock's first classic power trio. While their time together would be short, Cream proved to be one of the most influential rock groups in history, and are often considered the first "super group". They would pave the way for improvisational, free form jams that would become the hallmark of psychedelic rock scene. This BBC FM Broadcast captures Cream on December 9, 1966 in London, 55 years ago today and just about 5 months after their live debut in July. The broadcast features shorter versions of their songs as compared to later live performances. but is an important historical document of the band at its birth.
