1990s - #1: Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time,  This FM broadcast captures them on tour in support of that disc, in Italy on September 13, 1999, 23 years ago today.

Elton John - 1971-09-12 - Los Angeles, CA (Ex Aud)

1970s - #2:   On April 1 1971, Elton John returned for his third trip to the United States in less than a year, launching his tour in Boston He layed Carnegie Hall in New York on June 10 and 11, performing two shows each evening. For those concerts, Elton performered solo for the first half of the show, followed by a 2nd set with Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray. In Septmber, he arrived in Los Angeles for the tour finale..Elton's popularity had skyrockted in the past year as evdienced by the fact that whereas in 1970 he played the Troubador, a 400 seat club, on this tour he filled the Greek Theater, which seats over 5000, for 7 consecutive nghts!  This excellent audience recording captures the last night at the Greek, on September 12, 1971, 51 years ago today. Elton used the show to preview the entire Madman Across The Water album which wouldn;'t be released until 2 months later.

Folks, I do my best to re-post all shows that are requested, providing that those who ask are polite about it.  I really do appreciate a "please" or a "thanks in advance" as part of your request. It may be a pet peeve of mine, but I do not consider comments like "Dead Link or "Link is Dead" as requests.  Those are simply statements of fact! If you'd like me to re-post something, then ask nicely! A liitle kindness goes a long way!

Just a reminder - here's our complete policy on re-posts:  

• If there's a show you would like me to re-post, and you ask using common courtesy, I'll do my best to get to it in 48 to 72 hours. 

• I can take requests for the re-post of a show or two. More than that becomes impossible - remember that I'm taking re-post requests from lots of folks. Over 800 a day visit the site.  If just 1% of those visiyirs - 8 people - ask for re-posts, that 8 to 16 shows daily.

• If you are asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. Just not enough time in the day and I do have a wife, kids, job, etc.

• If you are rude in your request, you're getting no response.  

• If you go through a bunch of posts and simply comment "Dead Link", you are not getting a response

• Also, I will no longer take re-post requests from Anonymous users. Most of the time, the issues outlined above are caused by folks who are Anonymous, so unless you have some kind of identity (such as Speedy, or Wolfclan or AZ Jones, or PigStreet, etc), I won't be honoring the request. Having an identify enables me to determine who is a frequent visitor to So Many Roads and such folks will get priority when it comes to requests for re-posts! 

I know that these policies may be disappointing, but its the reality of the situation as there's simply not enough hours in the day to get to everything. Thanks for understanding.

Sly & The Family Stone - 1970-09-10 - Baarn, Netherlands (FM)

1970s - #1: In May 1969, Sly & The Family Stone released the album Stand, which would be the high point of the band's career, both commerically and critically. The disc went to #13 on the Billboard charts and featured the #1 single, Everyday People. The dalbum also fincluded two other classics - Sing A Simple Song  and I Want To Take You Higher.  On the heels of Stand, the band headlined the Halem Cultural festival and was invited to play Woodtsick in August 1969.  But success began to eat away at the group. Relationships within the group began to deteriorate, especially between the Stone brothers and Larry Graham. The band indulged in cocaime and PCP almost daily.  By 1970, the drug use made Sly erractic and moody, and he missed almost a third of the band's live performances. This FM broadcast captures one of the shows Sly actually did perform at, in Denmark on September 10, 1970, 52 years ago today.  Note - the cover art uses the European style date of day-month-year.

1980s - #3: In August 1980, Pat Benatar released her 2nd album, Crimes of Passion, featuring the hit single Hit Me with Your Best Shot, which cracked the top 10 on the Billboard charts. The album did even better, peaking at #2 for 5 consecutive weeks in early 1981 and selling over 5 million copies. The album also earned Benatar her first Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. In August 1981, the video of You Better Run, another cut from the album, would become the 2nd video ever played on MTV. This FM broadcast captures Ms. Benatar in Denver on September 9, 1980, 42 years ago today, while on tour in support of Crimes of Passion.
