Our Bob Dylan post today takes us to Liverpool, home of the Beatles, on May 14, 1966, 46 years ago today. Unlike the triumphant 1965 tour that we covered in our May 7 post, Dylan’s 1966 sojourn to England was filled with controversy. Having gone electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan brought The Hawks (later The Band) with him on tour, the first time he had gone on the road with a backing band. Each show consisted of an opening acoustic set and a closing electric one. Those electric sets became a lightning rod for open hostility from his audiences, who felt betrayed that he no longer played just acoustic folk songs. At the May 17 show in Manchester, which has been officially released, someone in the crowd screamed “Judas”, to which Dylan responded by telling the Hawk’s to “play it f***ing loud” as the launched into Like A Rolling Stone. At other shows, portions of the audience walked out during the electric sets. Even the critics took swipes at Dylan’s electric set, with one reviewer complaining that Dylan was “sacrificing lyric and melody to the God of big beat”. Unlike the crowds and critics in 1966, we here at So Many Roads are glad to Dylan went electric. So in honor of that, we have this soundboard recording of the electric set from May 14, 1966, 44 years ago today, which the web site Bob’s Boots says may have been the best such set of the tour.
