On September 3, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today, I attended my first Grateful Dead concert, a small intimate affair with a crowd of just over 150,000, at Englishtown, NJ. That show has been immortalized as Dick’s Picks 15. The two opening acts that day were the New Riders of The Purple Sage and The Marshall Tucker Band. The MTB rose to the occasion, playing a tremendous set including an incredible Can’t you See to close their performance. The Marshall Tucker/Grateful Dead Connection

Believe it or not, after a thorough search of several Grateful Dead databases, the Englishtown show appears to be the only time The MTB led in or played with the Grateful Dead! Guess if you are going to do something only once, you might as well make it a big moment! The closest other connection came in 1973, when the MTB served as the lead in band for a New Year’s Eve concert by The Allman Brothers (both of those shows are posted here at So Many Roads). Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann joined the Allmans for their final set, though it does not appear any members of the MTB participated in the closing jam.
