Leon Russell 1970 - Back To Back - #1: For the late great Leon Russell, the year 1970 produced one major success after another. He organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You, That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad and Deep as You.  Late in the year, Leon headlined two nights at the Fillmore East, with an upcoming English rocker by the name of Elton John as his lead in. The 2 would form a friendship that would endure over the decades, leading to recording an album together in 2010.  This soundboard recording captures Leon's first night at the Fillmore (with Elton sitting in for a song) on November 20, 1970, 4 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this set.
