Sir Paul McCartney was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the first time in 1988 as a member of The Beatles.  He did not show up for that induction as he was in legal disputes with George, Ringo, and John's widow, Yoko, at the time. Macca clearly made peace with everyone by 1994, as that year he inducted John into the Rock Hall as a solo artist. McCartney was then inducted for a 2nd time in 1999 as a solo artist. His daughter Stella wore a T-Shirt emblazoned with the words "About F**king Time" in reference to that fact her dad had to wait 4 years after John to be recognized for his solo work. Paul dedicated the night to his recently deceased wife, Linda. He kicked off the end of night jam with a rousing version of Blue Suede Shoes, paying homage to Carl Perkins in the process, then came back later for a surprise rendition of Let It Be to close the night. 

This excellent audience recording captures McCartney 3 years later in San Jose on April 3, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today, during his Driving The USA tour in April 2002, his first set of concerts in the states since 1993. It was also his first tour in the wake of the death of his wife Linda, his former band mate George Harrison, and the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Maybe those events caused Sir Paul to take a new perspective on his life. Maybe he began to realize that life truly was too short. Whatever the reason, it was clear that something had changed, because on this tour, more than on any previous solo venture, Paul seemed to truly embrace his past. Over 20 songs each night were Beatle classics. The set lists also included tributes to September 11 (Freedom), John (Here Today), George (Something) and Linda (My Love). My lovely bride and I saw Paul during that tour at Madison Square Garden on April 27, 2002, and the emotion that filled the building that night has stayed with me to this very day.
