02. About A Quarter Till Nine
In the summer, of 1972, Bobby Darin hosted a variety show on NBC that turned out to be a surprise hit for the network, The show was brought back in January 1973 as a mid-season replacement and ran until April. What no one knew at the time, however, was that the show would be Darin's swan song. The incomparable singer would die on December 20, 1973, after 5 hours of open heart surgery failed to repair his already damaged heart, which had suffered a fatal infection when Darin failed to take medications designed to protect his heart prior to a dentist visit earlier that month. He was only 37 years old. In 1990, Darin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nine years later, he was voted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. This TV Soundboard recording captures him on January 19, 1973, 43 years ago today, during the first episode of the winter run of his variety show. Rest in peace Bobby - the world still misses you and that golden voice. By the way - if you aren't familiar with Bobby Darin, no better time than now to start listening! And we'll have more from Bobby in both February and April!
