In 1981, the Dr. Pepper Music Festival was forced out of the Wollman Rink due to complaints from local residents about the noise from the concerts. As a result, the festival moved to Pier 84, on Manhattan’s West Side, right along the Hudson River. Two years later, Miller took over the sponsorship of the series, which ran another 5 years until 1988. I was fortunate to attend a host of shows on Pier 84 between 1982 and 1987. In addition to the great music, I will always remember that the concerts were held in the shadow of the U.S.S. Intrepid. The former aircraft carrier turned museum was docked right next door at Pier 86, providing an incredible backdrop to every show. This FM broadcast captures Ian Hunter on September 11, 1981, 33 years ago today, during the inaugural season of shows at Pier 84. The show is noteworthy for 2 reasons. First, during the introductions, fans are advised that the concert is being taped for a new network called MTV. That station had just launched on August 1, 1981. Second, if you see the video for this show (plenty of clips are on You-tube), you’ll notice that the Intrepid is conspicuous by its absence. That’s because the ship did not dock at Pier 86 until 1982!

I saw Ian Hunter several times in the late-seventies and early-eighties. A very, very underrated performer. So sorry I missed Mott. : (
