In 1975 by the late Harry Chapin and Bill Ayres founded Why Hunger, an organization whose goal was to put an end to hunger suffered by 49 million Americans and nearly 1 billion people worldwide. That same year, they came up with an idea to reach out for donations and aid using the power of the music and the radio. In conjunction with WNEW-FM, the leading rock station in America (we'll feature WNEW in this month's edition of What A Long Strange Trip Its Been), they launched Hungerthon, a 24 hour radio broadcast designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in the United States. Live music from rock artists concerned with this serious problem became a staple of each Hungerthon broadcast. Hungerthon has been an annual even since 1985, held right around Thanksgiving. This WNEW-FM Broadcast from Hungerthon 1988, held on November 12, 1988, 28 years ago today, capture’s CSNY’s set in support of this great cause. The often feuding foursome were actually on speaking terms at the time, having just completed the album American Dream. CSNY gets some help during their set from Jackson Browne and JD Souther. From what I can tell, all 17 songs on this bootleg were broadcast that day on the radio, however, only the first 12 were performed live. The other 5 were tracks previously recorded in 1986 and 1987.
