Jerry Garcia (Great American String Band) - 1974-04-20 - Hollywood CA (SBD)

The Great American String played just 7 shows between April 20th and June 13th, 1974.  The group was an eclectic acoustic ensemble which featured Jerry Garcia on banjo and guitar, David Grisman, Richard Greene, Taj Mahal, Sandy Rothman, David Nichtern, and Buell Neidlinger. Although the band consisted of three Old and in the Way members (see our April 28 post for more on that Garcia venture), bluegrass was not a strong influence on their sound. Rather, they were more of a blues and swing jazz ensemble. One of the last gigs they played together was opening for the Grateful Dead at UC Santa Barbara.  This soundboard recording captures them in Hollywood on April 20, 1974, 46 years ago today. Maria Muldaur, who would provide backing vocals during the Jerry Garcia Bands 1978 winter tour, sits in and plays her 1973 top ten hit, Midnight at The Oasis!
