Long time followers of So Many Roads have asked me to post more blues music. Our May 1977 theme provides me the perfect opportunity to do just that, by bringing you our first post from the legendary Muddy Waters. In October 1976, the one-time McKinley Morganfield left Chess Records and signed with Johnny Winters’ Blue Sky label. In just 3 day working with Winters, he recorded a new album, called Hard Again, which was released in January 1977. The album received rave critical reviews, including an A grade from Robert Christgau. The disc would go on to win a Grammy for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording. For Waters, who had been out of the spotlight for years, the album, plus his November 1976 appearance at The Band’s Last Waltz, launched him on the comeback trail. Muddy went on tour that spring in support of the album, including this show from San Francisco on May 14, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today.
