In 1984, Roger Waters, while in the midst of a power struggle with David Gilmour over the creative direction of Pink Floyd, launched his solo career. It did not get off to a good start to say the least. He released his first solo album, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking on April 30, 1984. The album dealt with the benefits and downsides of monogamy and family life vs. in Water’s words, pursuing the call of the wild. Despite guest appearances by Eric Clapton and David Sanborn, the album flopped. Rolling Stone's Kurt Loder described the disc as a "strangely static, faintly hideous record." Rogers toured Europe in support of the record, but ticket sales were weak. The set list was divided into 2 parts, with the first half consisting of Pink Floyd songs and the second half featuring the The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking album played in its entirety. The North American leg of the tour in early 1985 featured just 10 shows in 6 cities. His record label, CBS, refused to support the tour because they were still holding out hopes, in vain, for another Pink Floyd album. Despite that, the North American shows went far better than their European predecessors. This FM Broadcast from March 25, 1985, 27 years ago today, captures Waters one of those shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Excellent show. It's unfortunate that there isn't a high quality recording from the shows he played with Eric Clapton. The guy playing guitar on this one (I think it's Jay Stapley) doesn't even hold a candle to Clapton. Just check out "Sexual Revolution" and compare his playing to Clapton's. Wow, what a difference.

Another one I was at during my Senior year of High School. My floor seats before the balcony over hang were alot better than my Upper level seats on the left side center-ice at the Byrne the year before. Ticket sales seemed fine in the US for both the 1984 and the 1985 legs since both series in the NY area were all sold out - but I guess that's from a New Yorkers perspective -- I don't know what happened in the other cities (I used to pick up Billboard back then but not Pollstar).
The sound was much better at Radio City but Clapton's playing was amazing and the stage show seemed to work better at the larger Byrne as well even from the side angle.Although, I do remember some kind of buzz or hum happening for awhile at the RCMH show but at least it didn't make it into the broadcast mix.
Bought some excellent Reginald Scarffe T-shirts with the Rog dog that are still favorites (yes I still have all 31 years worth of concert shirts - they last a long time when you have 300+ to rotate).
And then after the show, I ran into some kids from my High School -- one of whom had a master key for the subway padlocks so we all got a free ride home.

I hope my Deposit File 10 GB limit resets soon so I can grab this one and the Dead with Stills since I only had the 2nd Set of that one which as my first Dead show.. I was hoping it would reset 30 days after I started my last round of d/ls with them on the 20th or at least by the 27th when I hit my 10 gig limit - so now I am 32 days after maxing out and I still don't understand how their reset works even though I have been through this twice more since the 1st of the year - maybe I have to totally avoid them for a while and not just avoid clicking the Start Download button for 30 days. I've got plenty more to keep me busy in the meantime.
