A day after performing their annual July 4th concert in Washington DC, The Beach Boys flew back to California for another performance the next day. Simulcast on both radio and TV on July 5, 1981, 39 years ago today, the concert, entitled, The Spirit of America Spectacular, featured the Beach Boys as headliners, with Three Dog Night, Rick Springfield and Pablo Cruise as opening acts. The show originated from the site where the Queen Mary is permanently docked in Long Beach, CA. and was hosted by DJ's Wolfman Jack and Charlie Tuna. Download this soundboard recording to hear the Beach Boys, including Brian Wilson, celebrate the USA. Note - the folder contains 2 versions of the show - between the 2 of them, 25 of the 28 songs played are accounted for - the set list above indicates the 3 missing tunes.

For collectors and hard core aficionados alike, this is known, quite frankly, as one of the Beach Boys worst performances EVER. Carl had abruptly jumped ship, due in part to the band's stagnation and refusal to rehearse.
This leaves poor Brian (at his lowest ebb) forced to sing all of Carl's leads. It's an artistic train wreck of epic proportions, but ya can't look away.
I think Bruce (or maybe Al) tried later to blame the performance on the broadcast 'mix,' but no.
Not long afterwards Carl completed his solo tour for his (quite good) Carl Wilson album, and the BB organization started using more hired hands to help with the harmonies.
