As mentioned in some earlier posts this month, while the 1967 album charts reflected the psychedelic sounds of disc such as Sgt Peppers, Surrealistic Pillow and Are You Experienced?, the singles charts continued to be dominated by pop music. That year, Tommy James and the Shondels, had 5 top 40 singles, including I Think We're Alone Now, which climbed all the way to #4 as the Summer of Love dawned. Many critics believe that Tommy James was a major influence on the genre know as Bubblegum Rock, with the tone and tenor of songs such as I Think We're Alone Now and Hanky Panky setting the stage for bubblegum hits such as Dizzy, Yummy Yummy Yummy and Sugar Sugar. This FM broadcast captures Tommy James, a quarter century after the Summer Of Love, in Pittsburgh on June 14, 1992, 30 years ago today.

Had the pleasure to see Tommy James perform after a baseball game in Fort Myers many years ago. He and that crew of Shondells sounded wonderful. His autobiography will tell you a lot about the shady dealings of the record business, but fortunately he was good to the bad guys and survived it all. Still performs and occasionally records.
