1990s - #3:  After achieving commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980’s, Warren Zevon’s career took a host of twists and turns. He battled alcoholism and obsessive compulsive disorder. He served as musical coordinator and occasional guitarist for an ad-hoc rock music group called the Rock Bottom Remainders, a collection of writers performing rock and roll standards at book fairs and other events. The group included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Matt Groening and Amy Tan, just to name a few. He occasionally filled in for Paul Schaffer as bandleader for David Letterman’s Late Night Show. And he continued to release albums and tour. This soundboard recording captures Zevon in Syracuse on February 19, 1995, 28 years ago today. Of course, less than 10 years later, on September 7, 2003, we’d lose Warren at the all to young age of 56, due to cancer, but not before he left us with a stunning farewell album, entitled The Wind, which featured guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, David Lindley, Emmylou Harris and Tom Petty, just to name a few. Months after his death, Zevon would win 2 Grammys for the album, the only ones of his legendary 30 year career.
