Bruce Springsteen - 2000-04-04 - Tacoma, WA (SBD ALD)

In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000. Some highlights included a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey and a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden, which ended the tour. At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Sprinsgteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. Now the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades. This soundboard ALD recording captures Bruce and the E Street Band near the end of the tour, on April 4, 2000, 10 years ago today in Tacoma. What I don't know -- the exact date of this show. The artwork simply says April 1967. Some web sites say it was taped March 31, and broadcast April 1. Other sites put the date anywhere from April 2 to April 7. One site even had it listed as February 28! What I do know -- its the Byrds from 1967, in Stockholm, playing several of their classics and its absolutely worth having in your collection! Download and enjoy!

Chuck Berry - 1974-03-18 - Los Angeles, CA (FM)

Chuck Berry was part of the inaugural class of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986, inducted alongside Buddy Holly, Elvis Presely, The Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke. Talk about star power. Durng that ceremony, Chuck showed why, in the words of Neil Young, "rock & roll will never die", as he led an all star jam on such classics as Roll Over Beethoven and Reelin' & Rockin'. This FM broadcast captures Berry a dozen years before his induction, on March 18, 1974, 3 dozen years ago today, in Los Angeles. The concert was taped for ABC In Concert, and broadcast about a month later, on April 12.

Bob Weir - 1978-03-08 - New York, NY (late) (Ex Aud)

1978:  The winter of 1978, Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead were both on the road, performing solo shows in support of their latest solo albums.  Weir released Heaven Help The Foll in January 1978, a disc he recorded during the summer of 1977 when the Dead were on a hiatus from touring due to an injury to drummer Mickey Hart.  Weir used a host of guest musicians on the disc, some of whom were highly unexpected, such as Nigel Olsen and Dee Murray from the Elton John Band, David Paich and Mike Porcaro from Toto, and Waddy Watchel, who played for everyone from Linda Ronstadt to James Taylor to Warren Zezon to Stevie Nicks. Even more interesting, when Weir hit the road in support of the disc, not one of the session musicians for the album were in his touring band.  That backing ensemble did include, however, one Brett Mydland, who a year later would replace Keith Godchaux as the keyboardist for the Grateful Dead.  This high quality audience recording captures Weir at the Palladium in New York on march 8, 1978, 32 years go today.

Linda Ronstadt - 1974-02-13 - Detroit, MI (HQ Aud)

On February 13, 1974, 3 dozen years ago today, Linda Ronstadt played the Michigan Palace in Detroit, as captured in this high quality audience recording. At the time she was serving as the lead-in for Jackson Browne for many shows, but the Jackson Browne website lists him playing at Cobo Hall in Detroit that night and does not say Linda lead in. Kind of strange that they would be on tour together, be in the same city, yet play different venues! In any event, Ronstadt was on tour in support of her album Don't Cry Now, which had been released in September 1973. Don't Cry Now became Ronstadt's second gold album and would be followed in late 1974 by her masterpiece, Heart Like a Wheel.

Little Steven - 1983-02-10 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

In 1982, while Bruce Springsteen was recording the solo acoustic album Nebraska, E Street band guitarist, Miami Steve Van Zandt began recording his debut solo disc, Men Without Women. Billing himself as Little Steven, to distance himself from any Springsteen comparison, Van Zandt also recruited his own backing band, which he christened the Disciples of Soul. The album was not, unfortunately, a commercial success, failing to crack the Billboard 100. The single from the disc, Forever, climbed to only #63 on the charts, despite having a video for the song in heavy rotation on MTv. The lack of chart success did not stop the band from touring. On July 18, 1982 Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul made their live debut at the Peppermint Lounge. This soundboard recording captures them 8 months later, live in Toronto on February 10, 1983, 27 years ago today.
