2002 - When Paul launched his Driving The USA tour in April 2002, his first tour since 1993, he had 24 dates scheduled over 2 months. The shows proved so successful that he came back for another run in the states in the fall, performing another 23 shows. He then took the tour to Mexico for 3 shows and finally to Japan for 5 concerts. This soundboard recording captures Sir Paul on the middle night in Mexico on November 3, 2002, 11 years ago today. As he was throughout this tour, Paul's in fine form, as is the new band he assembled for his return to performing; Brian Ray, Rusty Anderson, Paul "Wix" Wickens and Abe Laboriel Jr (who also plays drums for Clapton). Despite the recent tragedies in his life -- the death of Linda, the passing of George Harrison, and the events of September 11, 2001 -- Sir Paul seems to have found peace. Beatle songs abound throughout the performance, as Paul demonstrates he has come to terms with his legacy!

2008 - last month we brought you our first post featuring featuring the Black Crowes, from their 1999 shows with Jimmy Page. Today, we move forward 9 years for post #2 from the Crowes.  In November 2008, while on tour in support of their latest album Warpaint, the Black Crowes performed 2 very special acoustic concerts at Town Hall in New York. They picked an ideal venue for those shows, as the Town Hall’s long-standing mantra was "Not a bad seat in the house.. These 2 concerts would provide the inspiration for the band’s 2012 album Croweology, a two-CD set of acoustic arrangements of 20 of their classic tunes, including Jealous Again, Remedy and She Talks to Angels. This high quality audience recording captures the Crowes firs night at Town hall, on November 3, 2008, 5 years ago today. Download this one to hear the hard rocking Black Crowes take a more laid back approach to their music.

1988 - After 2 highly successful tours in 1985 and 1987, a number of shows from which you can find on this blog, Eric Clapton went back on the road in late 1988, but this time with a little help from his friends. When Slowhand launched his North American tour on September 1, 1988, Mark Knopfler was on board to help out on guitar and vocals. Then, when Eric went to Japan for 5 dates in late October/early November, not only did Knopfler make the trip, but Elton John joined the band as well. It's not often that 3 giants of rock and roll share the stage together, and even more rare to have 2 submerge their egos to play a supporting role. While the set list each night featured primarily music from the entire breadth of EC’s career, it also allowed both Knopfler and Elton to step out front on a few of their own tunes. This soundboard recording captures the entire show from Tokyo on November 2, 1988, a quarter century ago today. The Byrds - 1968-11-02 - Avalon Ballroom, SF (SBD)

1968 - For the Byrds, the year 1968 was marked by dramatic changes.  It began with the release of the album The Notorious Byrd Brothers, the pinnacle of The Byrds' psychedelic experimentation.  Yet, even as the album hit the charts, David Crosby and Michael Clarke were dismissed from the band.  Remaining members Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman then recruited Gram Parsons to join the Byrds.  Parsons was a huge influence of the band's next album, Sweetheart of The Rodeo, which was a dramatic shift in style.  In fact, the disc is often called the first ever country rock album.  Yet, soon after that album was released, Parsons left the band!  Then in October, Hillman also departed, leaving McGuinn as the only original member remaining in the Byrds.  So when the band hit the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco on November 2, 1968, 45 years ago today, for a show in the heart of the city where psychedelic music reigned supreme, the Byrds were not quite the Byrds.  That said, McGuinn, along with Clarence White on guitar, Gene Parsons on drums and John York on bass, put on a strong show, playing a mix of their original folk rock hits, their psychedelic excursions and their new country sound. 1990 - As mentioned in several posts here at So Many Roads, the period from 1989 to 1991 was perhaps the finest the band played after Jerry’s recovery from a diabetic coma in late 1986. That period encompasses numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including;

• the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989
• the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
• the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990
• the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; 
• a 6 concert box set from the Spring 1990
• the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990. 
• a show from Pine Knob on June 19,1991 
• a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991

Just a few weeks after the 1990 Madison Square garden shows mentioned above, the Dead went to Europe for 11 shows in 4 countries; Sweden, Germany, France and Great Britain. This soundboard recording captures the band on November 1, 1990, 23 years ago today, on the last night of the tour from Wembley Arena in London. 1987 - "Thank you, good evening, well it's not really a good evening. I thought it was supposed to be sunny and warm here all the time. Rain wasn't in the contract. Anyway we're gonna play a lot of new stuff for you from the new album in this half and a bunch of old... oldies but goodies later on for you, so if everyone prays a little bit that the weather holds we'll all have a good time." That's what Dave Gilmour said before Pink Floyd launched into Learning To Fly at the Orange Bowl in Miami on November 1,1987, 26 years ago today.  The band had just released its first album without Roger Waters, entitled A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and now was embarking on its first tour without tits former bassist and vocalist. Many critics complained that it wasn’t really Pink Floyd without Waters, but over $5.5 million fans shelled out over $100 million to purchase tickets to the 197 concerts the band played in 1987 & 1988. The Beach Boys - 1963-11-01 - Hollywood CA (SBD) 

1963 - In July 1963, the Beach Boys released their 2nd album entitled Surfin’ USA. The disc soared up the Billboard charts, climbing to #2. The album would stay on the charts for 78 weeks. The title track went to #3 on the charts. Incredibly, the band built on its success by releasing 2 more albums within the next few months. Surfer Girl hit record stores on September 16 and would climb to #7 on the charts. The disc yielded 3 top 25 singles, the title track at #7, Little Deuce Coup at #15 and In My Room at #23. Less than a month later, the Beach Boys released an album entitled Little Deuce Coop. The disc included 8 new sounds, but 4 tunes - the title track, Our Car Club, Shut Down and 409 - had all appeared on previous albums. Despite the redundancy, and the saturation of 3 albums in 4 months, the album Little Deuce Coop went to #4 on the Billboard charts.
