1968 - For the Byrds, the year 1968 was marked by dramatic changes.  It began with the release of the album The Notorious Byrd Brothers, the pinnacle of The Byrds' psychedelic experimentation.  Yet, even as the album hit the charts, David Crosby and Michael Clarke were dismissed from the band.  Remaining members Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman then recruited Gram Parsons to join the Byrds.  Parsons was a huge influence of the band's next album, Sweetheart of The Rodeo, which was a dramatic shift in style.  In fact, the disc is often called the first ever country rock album.  Yet, soon after that album was released, Parsons left the band!  Then in October, Hillman also departed, leaving McGuinn as the only original member remaining in the Byrds.  So when the band hit the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco on November 2, 1968, 45 years ago today, for a show in the heart of the city where psychedelic music reigned supreme, the Byrds were not quite the Byrds.  That said, McGuinn, along with Clarence White on guitar, Gene Parsons on drums and John York on bass, put on a strong show, playing a mix of their original folk rock hits, their psychedelic excursions and their new country sound.
