U2 made their first foray to North America in December 1980, playing 9 shows in 10 days in support of their debut album, Boy.  They returned to the US in March 1981 for a run that lasted until May 31, playing 60 shows in small clubs across the country.  At the time, the band had so little material that the encores consisted of replaying some of their more popular tunes, such as The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock and I Will Follow.  Reviews of the band were harsh, such as this piece from NME - "Which is more than I can say for U2 who are basically little more than nonsense... This four-piece Irish group are nothing more than a very traditional hard rock outfit with a singer -- one Bono by name -- who'd love to be Rod Stewart, in imitation of whom he moves much of the time, when he isn't busy imitating the inevitable Iggy, of course...U2 are really quite awful, though the young people -- particularly the mutant punks -- at the pop concert seemed to enjoy their tired old fakery." Tom Petty - 1980-03-06 - London, UK (SBD)

On October 19, 1979, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released their breakthrough album, Damn The Torpedoes. The disc climbed to #2 on the Billboard charts, where it stayed for 7 weeks, with the only thing preventing it from reaching the top spot being Pink Floyd’s monumental album The Wall. The album yielded two top 15 singles, Don't Do Me Like That which reached #10 and Refugee at #15. The album also contained soon to be FM radio favorites Here Comes My Girl, Even the Losers and Louisiana Rain. This FM broadcast captures Petty in the UK on tour in support of Damn The Torpedoes on March 6 1980, 3 dozen years ago today.  By the way, stop back tomorrow and we'll have another one from this tour!

The Eagles - 1980-03-04 - Ingelewood, CA (SBD)

This soundboard recording from March 4, 1980, 3 dozen years ago today, features The Eagles on tour in support of the last #1 album of the 1970's. The band spent over 2 years recording the follow up to their masterpiece Hotel California, and the result was another massive commercial success. When the band released The Long Run in September 1979, it debuted at #2 on the Billboard Albums chart. A few weeks later, the disc climbed to the top spot, dethroning Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door. The Long Run reigned for eight weeks in the #1 slot, finishing the decade in that position. The album has sold more than seven million copies to date in the US alone. It also yielded  three Top 10 singles; with the title track and I Can't Tell You both reaching #8, while the tune Heartache Tonight climbed all the way to number 1. Download this one to hear The Eagles play tunes from the last album they would record for over 14 years, as later in this tour the band would breakup, not to reunite until "Hell Freezes Over".  Listen to this one in memory of Glenn Frey.

Santana - 1987-03-03 - Baden-Baden, Germany (TV SBD) 

1987 -  The late 1980s were not kind to Santana. Some 20 years after they burst on the music scene, the band's albums barely made an impact on the Billboard charts. Beyond Appearances, released in 1985, only went to #50, while Freedom, released in 1987, barely cracked the top 100, peaking at #95. Critical reviews of the two discs were just as bad. Rolling Stone wrote that "Beyond Appearances hardly bears consideration on any level." Allmusic wrote that "Freedom was a literal return to form, but, unfortunately, not to the quality of early Santana albums." Santana would endure another decade of commercial and critical disappointment, before the album Supernatural stunned everyone in 1999 by climbing to #1 on the charts. In the interim, unable to make any magic in the studio, Carlos did what he did best - perform live, as evidenced in this TV sounboard recording from his European Tour in support of Freedom from March 3, 1987,29 years ago today.

Glen Campbell -  1985-03-02 - Greensboro, NC (FM)

To kick off our March Theme of Concerts from the 1980s, I though we'd pay tribute to Glen Campbell, whose 50 year musical career unfortunately has ended due to Alzheimer's disease, a condition which may soon also take him from this earth. Campbell released more than 70 albums, sold 45 million records and accumulated 12 Gold albums, 4 Platinum albums and 1 Double-Platinum album. He had over 80 singles charts, of which 29 made the Top 10.  Nine of those reached #1 on either the Billboard Country, Hot 100 or Adult Contemporary charts. We pay tribute to this legend with this soundboard recording from March 2, 1985, 31 years ago today, and wish him and his family Godspeed.

Lone Justice, fronted by Maria Mckee, has been a guiltily pleasure of mine since the very first time I heard the tunes Ways To be Wicked and Shelter. This FM broadcast captures Lothe band in Amsterdam on March 1, 1987, 32 years ago today. The band was on tour in support of their second album Shelter, which was co-produced by Jimmy Iovine and Steve Van Zandt. Yet even those two rock heavy weights and an infectious title track, couldn’t help the band achieve the breakthrough commercial success they sought, The album stalled at #65 on the Billboard charts, while the single made it only to #47. A shame that the public didn’t take to this vastly under rated band. Download this one and you can see for yourself what everyone missed.
