Graham Parker - 1979-06-06 - Hempstead, NY (FM) 

In March 1979, Graham Parker released Squeezing Out Sparks, which would become the signature album of his career. The album was a spectacular critical success. Robert Christgau called it "an amazing record" and gave it an A+. The Village Voice voted it album of the year. The album's critical reputation has continued to grow since its release over 3 decades ago. Trouser Press called it "his toughest, leanest and most lyrically sophisticated LP" while Allmusic cited it as his "finest album, a masterful fusion of pub rock classicism, new wave pop, and pure vitriol". In 2003, Rolling Stone placed Squeezing Out Sparks at number 335 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Filled with songs such as Discovering Japan, Local Girls, and Love Gets You Twisted, the disc showcases Graham Parker as one of New Wave’s 3 Angry Young Men, along with contemporaries Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. This FM broadcast captures Parker on June 6, 1979, 37 years ago today on tour in support of his classic album.

Grateful Dead - 1969-06-05 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

this soundboard recording captures the Grateful Dead on their home turf in San Francisco on June 6, 1969, 47 years ago today. That year, The Dead closed out the "Psychedelic 60's" with live music that embodied everything that nickname symbolized, and then some. The album Live Dead, recorded at he Filmore West in February 1969, received an grade of A+ from famed critic Robert Christgau, who proclaimed that "side two of this four-sided set contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded, and the rest is gently transcendent as usual." This show takes place at the same venue just 4 months later, and finds the Dead at their psychedelic peak.

The Highwaymen - 1996-06-04 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

Think of country music and the names Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash immediately spring to mind.  Add Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings and you have a virtual Mount Rushmore of Country Music. The superstar quartet recorded 3 albums together between 1985 and 1995: Highwaymen in 1985, Highwaymen 2 in 1990 and The Road Goes On Forever in 1995. This soundboard recording from The Greek Theater in Los Angeles captures them on tour in support of that final disc, on June 4, 1996, 2 decades ago this very day.

Joe Russo's Almost Dead - 2015-06-03 - Webster Hall, NY (SBD Matrix)

Formed in 2013, Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD) one of the many Grateful Dead offshoots and cover bands that emerged in the wake of Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. This sounboard matrix recording captures JRAD on June 3, 2015, just 1 year ago today, at the the 6th Annual Songs Of Love Benefit Concert at Webster Hall. Songs of Love is a non-profit foundation that creates free, personalized, original songs to uplift children and teens currently facing tough medical, physical or emotional challenges.  A good friend of mine is on the Board Of Directors. If you love music and love to help kids, then visit their site and make a donation.  And if you know a youngster facing tough issues, contact them and request a free song.  JRAD's set includes including a personalized “song of love” for 14-year-old Justin Miller who suffers from Fragile X syndrome.

Led Zeppelin  - 1973-06-02 - San Franciso, CA (Ex Aud + SBD)

Led Zeppelin launched their 1973 North American on May 4, about a month after the release of the band’s 5th album, Houses of The Holy, which had gone to the top of the charts in both the US and UK. Led Zep would play outdoor stadiums for the first time on this run, including a show in Tampa on the 2nd night of the tour that drew 56,800 fans, breaking the attendance record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. The shows also incorporated more theatrics and special effects, including dry ice, lasers, backdrop mirrors, hanging mirror balls and pyrotechnics. The last 3 shows of the tour at Madison Square Garden, were filmed and taped for use in compiling the band’s first concert movie and its accompanying live album soundtrack, both entitled The Song Remains The Same, which would be released in 1976. This soundboard recording captures the band just about 2 months prior to those MSG shows, in Buffalo on July 15, 1973, 4 decades ago today. Download this one to hear Led Zep cement their place as the biggest, and best band of the 1970s.

U2 - 1997-06-01 - East Rutherford, NJ (ALD)

When U2 released their 9th studio album, Pop, in March 1997, it had been 4 years since their last disk, Zooropa. Clearly fans were anxiously awaiting he disc, as upon release it went to #1 in 35 different countries. The band would eventually release 6 singles from the disc, more than from any other album they had produced. Yet, despite that incredible early commercial success, Pop would eventually become one of the more disappointing moments in U2’s long, storied career. The album was a new direction for the band, combining influences from genres such as techno, dance, and electronica, and utilizing techniques such as sampling, loops, and programmed drum machines. Neither fans nor critics knew what to make of the band’s new sound. While Rolling Stone praised the disc, giving it a 4 star rating (out of 5), famed critic Robert Christgau called it “a dud”. To be honest, he didn’t write anything, he just used a picture of a bomb to indicate his displeasure! The band eventually agreed with that assessment, recording numerous songs from the album for re-release, and dropping most of the material from it during their later tours. In 1997, however, they were still in full support of the album, launching the massive Popmart tour that would feature 94 shows on 6 different continents. This soundboard recording captures the band on June 1 1997, 19 years ago today, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
