I’m always perplexed how some performers with almost no talent become stars, while others who have incredible song writing and musical abilities never seem to get any recognition. John Hiatt, unfortunately falls in he latter group.  Hiatt is an incredible song writer, with his tunes having been covered by such greats as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and BB King, just to name a few. Unfortunately for Hiatt, folks often don’t realize he’s the writer of the song, such as when Bonnie Rait released a version of Thing Called Love, which she took to the #11 spot on the Billboard charts in 1989. That song came from his 1987 album Bring The Family, which clearly was his finest work as a musician. Supported by Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder, and Jim Keltner,  Hiatt recorded that disc in a mere 4 days. In addition to Thing Called Love, the album included Memphis In The Meantime, Lipstick Sunset, Thank You Girl, Your Dad Did, Learning How To Love You, Tip Of My Tongue and, perhaps his most popular and touching tune, Have A Little Faith In Me. All of those became integral components of his live shows, as evidenced in this live acoustic set from September 8, 1991, 27 years ago today. Grateful Dead with Jefferson Airplane  - 1969-09-07 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

The Grateful Dead and The Jefferson Airplane were the leading lights of the psychedelic San Francisco music scene that emerged in  1965,  The 2 bands would headline the Human Be-in on January 14, 1967 in Golden Gate Park, a concert which put San Francisco’s counter culture on the map and served as a prelude to the Summer Of Love. The Airplane and Dead also performed at Monterrey Pop in June 1967, and at Woodstock in August 1969. In fact, the 2 bands shared the same bill quite frequently, with Deadbase listing 50 such concerts from 1965 to 1970. Who knows how many more undocumented pairings also took place? Most of those shows took place at landmark San Francisco venues such as Winterland, The Carousel Ballroom, The Family Dog and, of course, The Fillmore. Famed promoter Bill Graham was heavily involved with both bands. In 1967, as the Grateful Dead were working on their debut album, Jerry Garcia also spent time helping the Airplane produce their classic 2nd album, Surrealistic Pillow. Garcia in fact, was the source of the album’s title, when he mentioned that, as a whole, the album sounded "as surrealistic as a pillow is soft." Although RCA, the Airplane’s record company would not acknowledge Garcia's considerable contributions to the album with a "Producer" credit, he is listed as "spiritual advisor." While the 2 bands would go their separate ways in the 1970s, their initial partnership would spotlight the cultural revolution that was taking place in the City By The Bay. This soundboard recording captures the 2 bands sharing the stage at The Family Dog on September 7, 1969, 49 years ago today. It's an incredibly unique set, featuring the 2 bands teaming up on oldies such Peggy Sue, Louie Louie and Twist & Shout, not quite the psychedelic sound the 2 bands had come to embody!

In the early 1980’s, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, had a vision. He would bring a large scale rock and roll festival to Southern California that would unite music, television, computer technology, and people, all while addressing logistical issues such as overcrowding, traffic control, and lack of facilities that had plagued earlier festivals. Thus, the US Festivals were born. Somehow, he pulled it off twice, in September 1982 and May 1983, hosting 2 events that were each attended by hundreds of thousands of fans with minimal issues, despite 115-degree heat at the first US show. The two festivals included large air-conditioned tents featuring the US Festival Technology Exposition, a dazzling display of then-cutting edge computers, software, and electronic music devices. Bill Graham handled booking and running the concerts, which clearly contributed to their operational success. Of course, Wozniak’s deep pockets didn’t hurt, as he could afford to lose almost $20 million on the 2 festivals. At the first festival, days 1 and 2 primarily featured new wave and punk bands such as The Clash, The Police, The B52’s and The Talking Heads. Day 3, which was September 5, 1982, 3 dozen years ago today, featured more established rock bands such as Jimmy Buffett, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Brown and the Grateful Dead. To be honest, having “Breakfast with The Dead” kick off day 3 wasn’t the best of decisions. The Dead were more of a late night band, tending to end, rather than begin, shows at breakfast time! In any event, they didn’t do half bad in the lead-off spot, playing an elongated 16-song set that opened with Playing In The Band and ended with a cover of Satisfaction. Old folks like me will remember when every Labor Day Weekend, a local TV station would broadcast the Jerry Lewis Telethon to raise money to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. Children with the disease were often shown during the telethon, with announcers imploring folks to donate for Jerry's Kids. Of course, Dead Heads would later co-opt that phrase, to highlight their devotion to the the Dead's leader, Jerry Garcia. The telethon usually featured your typical for the era Las Vegas style entertainers, but occasionally, a rock superstar would appear. One such moment happened on September 4, 1972, 46 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording, when John Lennon & Yoko Ono joined Lewis on stage. In 1972, Lennon was the target of the Nixon administration, who hoped to deport the ex-Beatle for his association with extreme radical Yippie activists like Jerry Rubin and Angela Davis. Hardly the best company for Lennon to keep when petitioning for a Green Card. In an effort to show the U.S. government that he was wasn't a radical extremist, Lennon made a number of public appearances supporting various charities, including an appearance on Jerry's Telethon:  By the way, you can see video of that historic moment here.

In October 2003, Van Morrison released his 30th studio album ,entitled What's Wrong with This Picture?  The disc went to #32 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the US, and was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Contemporary Blues Album. This FM broadcast features excerpts from his concert in Toronto on September 4, 2004, 14 years ago today and just about a year after the release of What's Wrong With This Picture? Interestingly, the broadcast does not include any of the tunes from the new album though Van played several such as Stop Drinking, Once in a Blue Moon, and Whinin' Boy Moan, as evidenced by the full set list found here.

Just days before the Beatles arrived in Philadelphia, the 10th stop on their 1964 Summer Tour of the US, the “City of Brotherly Love” failed to live up to its nickname. Race riots broke out across the city between August 28 and 30 over the issue of police brutality. As a result of the violence, 41 people were injured, 774 people were arrested and 225 stores were damaged or destroyed. The Beatles found clear evidence of the racial tension in the city, as the entire crowd of 12,037 who attended their show at Conventional Hall on September 2, 1964, 53 years ago today. was white.
