In the early 1980’s, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, had a vision. He would bring a large scale rock and roll festival to Southern California that would unite music, television, computer technology, and people, all while addressing logistical issues such as overcrowding, traffic control, and lack of facilities that had plagued earlier festivals. Thus, the US Festivals were born. Somehow, he pulled it off twice, in September 1982 and May 1983, hosting 2 events that were each attended by hundreds of thousands of fans with minimal issues, despite 115-degree heat at the first US show. The two festivals included large air-conditioned tents featuring the US Festival Technology Exposition, a dazzling display of then-cutting edge computers, software, and electronic music devices. Bill Graham handled booking and running the concerts, which clearly contributed to their operational success. Of course, Wozniak’s deep pockets didn’t hurt, as he could afford to lose almost $20 million on the 2 festivals. At the first festival, days 1 and 2 primarily featured new wave and punk bands such as The Clash, The Police, The B52’s and The Talking Heads. Day 3, which was September 5, 1982, 3 dozen years ago today, featured more established rock bands such as Jimmy Buffett, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Brown and the Grateful Dead. To be honest, having “Breakfast with The Dead” kick off day 3 wasn’t the best of decisions. The Dead were more of a late night band, tending to end, rather than begin, shows at breakfast time! In any event, they didn’t do half bad in the lead-off spot, playing an elongated 16-song set that opened with Playing In The Band and ended with a cover of Satisfaction.
