The Byrds - 1989-01-04 -  San Juan Capistrano, CA (HQ Aud)

1980s - #1: In January 1989, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby and Chris Hillman reunited to tour as The Byrds.  Their motivation, however, was not musical, but rather legal and financial.  Another former Byrd, Michael Clarke, has been touring the country using the Byrds name, and had even applied for a trademark.  To counter Clarke, the trio also applied to trademark the name The Byrds, filed a lawsuit gains Clarke citing deceptive business practices, and used the tour to demonstrate they had not surrendered the use of the name The Byrds to anyone else. While the trio's tour was a resounding musical success, it failed to convince the court to side in their favor, as Clarke gained complete ownership of the name The Byrds. This high quality audience captures McGuinn, Crosby and Hillman during that 1989 tour, on January 4, 1989, 33 year ago today.  By the way, all 5 original Byrds (Gene Clark being the 5th) put their differences aside in January 1991 to perform at the band's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Sadly, it would be the last time the 5 original members performed together, as Michael Clarke and Gene Clarke passed away within the next 2 years. Of course, those induction ceremonies opened other wounds, as long time Byrds members such as Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, just to name 3, were completely ignored by the Rock Hall of Fame.

A New Year's Resolution - BE KIND!

In the tune Uncle John's band, the Grateful Dead ask the question "Are You Kind?'.  In our World today, so fractured in opinions, which is exacerbated by social media where anonymous trolls can leave hateful and harmful messages and misinformation, a little bit more kindness would do us all some good.

So I've resolved in 2022 to do my best to be kind.  No more rants on my blog if I feel wronged or harmed. No more snarky social media comments. Just going to try to be thankful for all I have in my life - wonderful family and friends, two great rescue dogs, food on the table, a roof over my head, great music to listen to and share, etc.  I'm sure it won't be easy, and I know I'll mess up - I'm human after all - but that's my guiding principle for 2022 - BE KIND!

So, to start down that road, let me take a few minutes to say thank you:

The Pretenders - 1979-01-02 - London, UK (FM)

1970s - #2: The Pretenders released their self titled debut album in December 1979 and it was almost immediately a commercial and critical success. The disc reached #1 on the charts in the UK and climbed to #9 on The Billboard charts in the US. Famed rock critic Robert Christgau gave the disc an A- rating while Rolling Stone wrote that the album “stands as some of the freshest, most provocative music around right now." This FM broadcast from London from January 1, 1979. 43 years ago today, captures The Pretenders almost a year prior to that album release, in what might be the earliest known live broadcast of the band!

America - 1972-01-01 - Bergen, Netherlands (FM)

1970s - #1: America released their self titled debut album on December 29 1971, and their single, Horse With No Name, on January 31, 1972.  Both the album and the single would soon climb to #1 on the Billboard charts. The album also spawned another top 10 single, I Need You, which would reach #9. This FM broadcast captures the band in the Netherlands, on January 1, 1972, a half century ago today, right before their chart topping debut.

For January 2022, our theme will be 6 decades, 6 concerts, or for short 6 by 6. In other words, we'll feature 6 different concerts from each of 6 decades (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s) for a total of 36 shows this month.
