1970s - #4: In February 1974,  Van Morrison released the classic live album It's Too Late Too Stop Now which featured his historic 1973 tour backed by the 11 piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Of course, in typical Van fashion, he had disbanded that group and was playing with a new assortment of musicians for this 1974 tour. This soundboard recording captures him durng that 1974 run, in Denmark, on April 6, 1974, a half century ago today.

1990s - #2: When Sheryl Crow released the album Tuesday Night Music Club in August 1993, it garnered some critical accolades but very little public attention. Crow was featured in Rolling Stone’s “New Faces In Rock” section that year, but neither the album or its initial 2 singles charted. Finally, over a year later, the 3rd single from the disc, All I Wanna Do became a surprise smash hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album to the #3 spot. By 1995, therefore, Sheryl becamethe latest female artist to ascend to the throne of Queen of Rock. This soundboard recording captures Sheryl in Milwaukee on April 5, 1995, 29 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1970-04-04 - Cincinnati OH (SBD)

1970s - #3: Just about a month after Woodstock, on September 19, 1969, the counter-culture came to Cincinnati with the opening of a new club called the Ludlow Garage. The venue even incorporated pieces of the original Woodstock sound system. The Ludlow actually had been a garage, and patrons who entered the building walked down huge ramps that had once been used to bring cars up from the basement. The club was owned by Jim Tarbell, a former youth counselor who felt the best way to keep kids off the street was to put on a concert! He started in 1967 by holding shows in an abandoned church, but was so successful, that he needed more space. The 10,000 square foot Ludlow Garage, which could hold 1200 people, fit the bill. Though open for less than 2 years, the Ludlow hosted some of the biggest acts of the day, including the Santana, The Kinks, Humble Pie, Boz Skaggs, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad and Fairport Convention. As a result, the club earned the reputation as the “Fillmore of the Midwest”. This soundboard recording captures another legendary act, the Allman Brothers, playing at the Ludlow, on April 4, 1970, 54 years ago today.  Note - date on the back cover is incorrect.

1970s - #2: After the psychedelic live trip that was the year 1969, the Grateful Dead used 1970 to hone their song writing, vocal harmonies, and studio recordings. Two of the band’s finest albums, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, were released in 1970. In fact, legend has it that Jerry Garcia had made an arrangement that in return for his playing pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children, CSNY would teach the members of the Grateful Dead how to sing harmony for those albums. In any event, just because the Dead spent significant time in the studio in 1970 doesn't mean they didn’t go out on the road. In fact, the band played 142 live shows in 1970! This soundboard captures the Dead on April 3, 1970 54 years ago today, in Cincinnati, featuring a set list that clearly demonstrates the band's transition - 2 electric sets that reflect back to 1969 and an acoustic one featuring tunes from both 1970 albums.

1990s - #1: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued his partnership with Wassermna, soemtimes with Ratdog, sometimes as a duo,  after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Dead & Company, the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This FM broadcast captures Weir & Wassermann in Philadelphia on April 2 1998, 26 years ago today.

1970s - #1: For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. This FM broadcast brings you some early Rockpile, from,London, on April 1, 1977, 47 tears ago this very day.
