Santana – 1980-08-03 – Shelton CT (SBD)

In the late 1970’s, Santana’s music began to move away from the traditional fusion of Latin, jazz, rock and blues toward a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound. That transition began with the album Inner Secrets in 1978, and continued on with Marathon in 1979 and Zeebop in 1981. While those albums produced some outstanding tracks, including, Stormy, Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Winning, Santana’s core fan base questioned the band’s direction. One thing which did not change during this period, however, was the band’s ability to play dynamic live concerts. As this soundboard from Shelton CT from August 3, 1980, 32 years ago today, demonstrates, Carlos could still play guitar with the best of them and the band could electrify any concert venue. Download this one to hear how Santana integrated some of his new AOR sound with the more Latin infused sound from earlier in his career.

As I've mentioned before here on So Many Roads, 1982 was one of the few years between 1977 and 1995 when I didn't see the Grateful Dead in concert. Thanks to recommendations from my on line buddies AZ Jones and Wolfclan, however, I've spent a lot of time in recent years listening to tapes from that year. Recently, "Live From The Archives", one of the sites listed in my blog roll, also posted several Dead shows from 1982. They noted that "1982 found the band leaning toward a simple, more straight ahead rock approach than previous years. The entire year is full of fantastic shows and I was torn as to which one to post". Well, you can check out 1982 for yourself  with this soundboard recording from St Paul from August 6, 1982, 30 years ago today. This soundboard recording captures the Dead on August 1 1982, 3 decades ago today. It was Garcia’s 40th birthday, reminding us that today would have been #70 for Jerry had we not lost him in 1995.  Download this one and remember all the music Jerry left us with.

As promised a few days ago, here's the 2nd half of our Double Play featuring Jerry Garcia in 1984. This soundboard recording captures Jerry on his home turf in San Francisco, on July 31, 1984, 28 years ago today.

August's Theme At So Many Roads

For August, our theme will be The 1980s.  Every show we post will have taken place during the decade which saw:

• Several of the classic bands from the 1960s and 1970s disband or take significant time off, some permanently, such as Led Zeppelin due to the death of John Bonham, and others temporarily, such as The Who, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.
• The rise of new wave and punk acts to positions of prominence, though some like The Clash, would burn out, others such as Elvis Costello would radically change their sound, and still others, such as U2, would find themselves on top of the rock world.
• Rock again would become associated with social causes, as evidenced by Live Aid, Farm Aid, The Amnesty Concerts, and The Bridge School Benefits. 
• The rise of MTV, a medium which originally served as a vehicle for new acts, but which by decade's end would help artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac and even the Grateful Dead find a vast nationwide audience.

Jerry Garcia - 1984-07-28 - Palo Alto, CA (SBD) 

For Jerry Garcia, 1984 was a difficult year, when heroin use began to escalate. He would enter a drug treatment facility later that year, but really didn’t clean up his act for almost 2 years, until he miraculously recovered from a diabetic coma, which had been triggered by poor health and drug abuse. Despite his dependence of heroin, Garcia could still play guitar with passion and intensity, though not as consistently as in the past. This soundboard captures him in Palo Alto on June 28, 1984, 28 years ago this very day, on one of those nights when he rose above the drugs that were consuming him.
