When Dire Straits launched the 2nd leg of their fall tour in October 1978, it marked their first extended run of shows outside of the UK. The band visited France, Germany Belgium and the Netherlands, promoting both their self-titled debut album and the single, Sultans of Swing. This soundboard recording captures the band on October 19, 1978, 35 years ago today, the 2nd of 6 nights in the Netherlands. • Reviews of Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits first big hit, often cited Mark Knopfler’s vocal as sounding like Dylan. 
• When he saw Dire Straits for the first time in 1978, Dylan was so impressed that he invited Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers to play on his next album, Slow Train Coming. 
• Knopfler also played on the Dylan album’s Infidels and Down In The Groove. 
• In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Knopfler toured as the lead in act for Dylan and occasionally sat in during Bob’s set.

The tour consisted of 2 legs, 29 shows from June to August, then another 6 in October. This soundboard recording captures Buffett on the 2nd night of the 2nd leg, in Las Vegas on October 18, 1997, 16 years ago. • Jimmy Buffett only started playing his 1973 song He Went To Paris in concert after he found out that Dylan was fond of the tune. 
• In a 2009 interview, Dylan cited Buffett as one of his favorite song writers. Also on the list were Gordon Lightfoot, Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, John Prine and Guy Clark.

Bob Dylan - 1987-10-17 - London, UK (SBD)

After playing 6 shows with the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1987, Bob Dylan launched a tour of Israel and Europe on September 5. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers served both as his opening act, and his backing band for the run. Roger McQuinn also opened for Dylan each night in addition to Petty, and often joined Bob for the encores. The tour consisted on 30 shows in 11 countries, ending with 5 nights at Wembley Arena in London. This soundboard recording captures the last night at Wembley, the final night of the tour, on October 17, 1987, 26 years ago today. Little Steven - 1982-10-16 - Essen, Germany (FM)

In 1982, while Bruce Springsteen was recording the solo acoustic album Nebraska, E Street band guitarist, Miami Steve Van Zandt began recording his debut solo disc, Men Without Women. Billing himself as Little Steven, to distance himself from any Springsteen comparison, Van Zandt also recruited his own backing band, which he christened the Disciples of Soul. The album was not, unfortunately, a commercial success, failing to crack the Billboard 100. The single from the disc, Forever, climbed to only #63 on the charts, despite having a video for the song in heavy rotation on MTv. The lack of chart success did not stop the band from touring. On July 18, 1982 Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul made their live debut at the Peppermint Lounge. Three months later, on October 16, 1982, 31 years ago today, they headlined The Rockpalast in Essen, Germany. One of the incredible stories of the 1980s was the rise of U2 from new wave dance band to taking a position as one of rock’s elite, without a doubt the biggest band in the world by the decades end, as seen in a post earlier this month. With this post, we go back to the band’s early days, before they even played their first show in the US in December 1980. This FM broadcast captures U2 at their first performance outside of the UK and Ireland, on October 14, 1980, 33 years ago today and 6 days prior to the release of their debut album. According to the notes on the site U2gigs, less than 50 people showed up!

As most rock fans know, the Beach Boys album Smile became legendary for never being released. In fact, the 1966 project, which was Brian Wilson’s attempt to create an American musical masterpiece that rivaled albums such as Revolver by the Beatles, almost destroyed the band. Brian Wilson became so consumed by the project that he suffered a mental breakdown. His band mates almost revolted against him as they felt the music was far too removed from their established sound. Smile was shelved and became the subject of decades of speculation and rumors. In 2003, however, Brian Wilson, after years of ignoring the work, decided to revisit the album, and complete it from memory. Even more shocking, he decided to go on tour in 2004 and play the newly completed version live. This FM broadcast brings you the entire Smile album taken from 2 nights at Carnegie Hall on October 12 and 13, 2004, 9 years ago today and tomorrow. Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - 1999-10-12 - New York, NY (SBD)

In October 1999, Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes teamed up for 6 shows, 3 in New York City. 1 in Worcester, MA and 2 in Los Angeles.  Each night's set list featured a mix of Led Zep and Black Crowes tunes. The LA shows yield a live album entitled, Live At The Greek. Unfortunately, due to contractual issues, the album could not include any Black Crowes material.  The October shows were so successful that Page and the Crowes went on tour together from June to October 2000.  This soundboard recording captures the night this successful collaboration began, on October 12, 1999, 14 years ago today, at the Roseland Ballroom in New York.  Download this one and you'll get all the songs played, unlike the official release!

Jimmy Page/Bob Dylan Connections

• The Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page, covered Dylan's "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)," at a BBC session on March 17, 1967.
•  Like Dylan, Page was influenced by Joan Baez. On Zeppelin's eponymous debut album, there's a cover of Anne Bredon's "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" based on a version released by Baez.
• Page once said of Dylan: ...Oh my goodness ... He changed it all, didn't he? Yeah, he's just remarkable, Bob Dylan. His early work ... and still now. He is just head and shoulders above so many people".
