One of the incredible stories of the 1980s was the rise of U2 from new wave dance band to taking a position as one of rock’s elite, without a doubt the biggest band in the world by the decades end, as seen in a post earlier this month. With this post, we go back to the band’s early days, before they even played their first show in the US in December 1980. This FM broadcast captures U2 at their first performance outside of the UK and Ireland, on October 14, 1980, 33 years ago today and 6 days prior to the release of their debut album. According to the notes on the site U2gigs, less than 50 people showed up!

U2/Bob Dylan Connections

• Dylan and Bono struck up a friendship in 1984 that has lasted to this day. 
• U2 covered Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower on their 1988 live album, Rattle and Hum. 
• On the same album, Dylan co-wrote the song Love Rescue Me. 
• Both Dylan and U2 appeared in Little Stephen’s video for the song Sun City which was produced to protest apartheid. 
• Daniel Lanois who produced such U2 albums as The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, also collaborated with Dylan on Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind.
