Three Dog Night - 1985-11-17 - Houston, TX (SBD)

1985 - From 1968 to 1975. Three Dog Night dominated the Billboard singles chart. The band scored 21 Top 40 hits, including 3 that reached the top spot, each featuring a different lead singer - Mama Told Me Not to Come (Cory Wells on lead), Joy to the World (Chuck Negron on lead); and Black and White (Danny Hutton on lead). Dunhill Records claimed that the band sold over 40 million record albums during that stretch. Soon after their run of hits ended, the band disbanded in July 1976. They reformed in 1981, and launched a tour 4 years later in 1985. This soundboard recording captures the band on November 17, 1985, 28 years ago today, in Houston TX. Soon after this show, Chuck Negron was let go by the band due to a relapse of drug use. Downlaod this one, therefore, to hear one of the last times the band’s 3 lead singers all appeared on stage together. Neil Young - 1992-11-17 - Chicago, IL (SBD) 

1992 - After a series of hard rocking albums with Crazy Horse in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Neil Young returned to his acoustic roots with 1992’s disc, Harvest Moon. The album was Neil’s 20th studio disc, and in name, tone, and supporting cast, harkened back to his landmark recording Harvest, released 2 decades prior. Ben Keith, Tim Drummond and Kenny Buttrey backed Neil on Harvest Moon, just as they had on Harvest. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor made guest appearances on the 1992 disc, just as they had on its 1972 predecessor. Interestingly, 3 folks who played on Harvest that did not appear on Harvest Moon were Neil’s sometime band mates, Crosby, Stills and Nash. In any event, Harvest Moon climbed to #16 on the Billboard charts, and received a four star review from Rolling Stone. AllMusic wrote that the title track was “positively gorgeous". In addition, Classic Rock Review named Harvest Moon its album of the year for 1992. The Beatles - 1964-11-17 - London, UK (FM) 

1964 - As Beatlemania swept across Liverpool, London and eventually the whole world, The Beatles promoted their music through regular guest spots on BBC radio. On November 17, 1964, 49 years ago today, the Fab Four performed 6 songs that were taped for the BBC show Top Gear. The session took place at London's Playhouse Theatre from 7:30 to 11:30 pm. The show was broadcast the following week, putting The Beatles back on the airwave after a 4 month hiatus while they were on tour. On November 25, 1964, The Beatles visited the BBC’s Studio One at Aeolian Hall where they performed 2 more songs, Rock And Roll Music and Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey for the BBC Show Saturday Club. It would be the last of 10 times they performed for that show. When that edition of Saturday Club was aired on December 26, it also included 4 of the songs from the Top Gear show! 1972 - In 1971, in the wake of one of the first (though most certainly not the last) CSNY break up, Stephen Stills formed Manassas, recruiting an all-star cast including Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels, Paul Harris, Dallas Taylor, and Joe Lala. The band released their self- titled debut, a double album, on April 12, 1972. This BBC broadcast captures Stills and Manassas later that year in London, on November 16. 1972, 41 years ago today. The album would climb to #4 on the Billboard charts in June. Ironically, Manassas would share space in the top 10 that week with Harvest from Neil Young and the self-titled debut record from Crosby & Nash. Maybe that chart success was a harbinger of the future. In yet another ironic twist, CSNY would reform in October 1973, soon after the 4 members appeared on stage together at, of all places, a Manassas concert!

2010 - On September 15, 2010, Roger Waters launched The Wall Live tour, a technological and theatrical marvel that has run for over 3 years and 200 plus shows as of today. At each show, Waters played The Wall album in its entirety, including 2 songs, What Shall We Do Now? and The Last Few Bricks, not included in the original release. The concert featured countless special effects, including building a wall across the stage, then later destroying it; to giant puppets and inflatable balloons, and crashing planes and explosions. Numerous videos are also incorporated throughout the show to further the storyline. While the original story of The Wall was one of isolation and psychological stress, Water’s Wall Live performances stressed anti-war, anti-capitalism and anti-poverty themes. The shows have received tremendous critical acclaim. The Setorian, for example, wrote that “Roger Waters' tour of his seminal album, "The Wall," lavishes in Broadway-esque pomp, but never compromises its music for theatrics. This is a rock concert, one that succeeds in transforming Pink Floyd's brilliant 1979 opus into a compelling aesthetic and auditory experience.” This HQ audience recording captures Waters on November 16, 2010, just 3 years ago today, in Tampa near the start of this ambitious tour. 2003 - After going far too long without posting any John Hiatt here at So Many Roads, this marks the 3rd straight month we’ve brought you one of his shows. On May 6, 2003, Hiatt released his 17th studio album, entitled Beneath This Gruff Exterior. The album marked his debut with New West Records, and was also the first to credit his backing band, The Goners, on the front cover. The Goners, consisting of Sonny Landreth on guitar, David Ranson on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums, had also backed Hiatt on the albums Slow Turning and The Tiki Bar Is Open. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt and the Goners on tour in support of Beneath This Gruff Exterior in Switzerland on November 16, 2003, a decade ago today.
