Grateful Dead - 1977-12-31 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

While Santana and Eddie Money were rocking the Cow Palace on the outskirts of San Francisco, back in the heart of The City By The Bay, The Grateful Dead were on stage for the first set of their show on December 31, 1977, 36 years ago today at Winterland. The crowd at Winterland had all been handed flyers that read "Good things come to those who wait. New Year's Eve will start at 12:30 tonight.” Turns out that legendary promoter Bill Graham was doing double duty that night, handling both the Santana/Money show and the Dead’s concert. The Dead normally kicked off the 2nd set of their New Year Eve shows at midnight, with Graham making an appearance during the countdown to the new year in some outlandish costume. For example, in 1976 he appeared out of an hour glass, while in 1978 he would fly in on a giant marijuana joint! In order to accommodate Graham appearing in the 1977 festivities - he would fly in on a motorcycle - midnight at Winterland was pushed back a half hour! For the Dead, the concert marked the final show of what many Deadheads, myself included, believe was the band’s finest year. For the last 2 songs before the encore, the Dead broke out 2 of their most famous covers, versions of Buddy Holly’s Not Fade Away and Chuck Berry’s Around and Around. Two songs later, the Dead’s last show of the legendary year that was 1977 was history. And two hours from now, with our New Year’s celebration now done, we’ll bid goodbye to 2013. Happy New Year everyone!

Santana - 1977-12-31 - San Francisco (FM)

Eddie Money’s New Year’s Eve concert at the Cow Palace, which we posted just a few hours ago, was simply the warm up for the main event. The featured attraction on December 31, 1977, 36 years ago today was the one and only Carlos Santana. In October 1977, Santana had released Moonflower, a double album that included both live tracks from their 1976 European tour and new studio material recorded in San Francisco. The disc also mixed musical styles, incorporating not only the Latin and blues-rock styles of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but also the experimental and spiritual jazz fusion sound that characterized the band's mid-1970s work. This dichotomy of styles and material, which could have resulted in an incoherent mess of an album, instead blended seamlessly to produce a critical and commercial success. The album went to # 10 on the charts and was eventually certified platinum. It would be 22 years until another Santana album accomplished both those feats, when Supernatural went to #1 on the charts and was certified as 15 times platinum in 1999. Moonflower’s studio tracks included a cover version of the Zombies' 1960s hit song, She's Not There, which was released as a single and peaked at number 27. The song was the first Santana recording to hit the Top 40 on the Billboard charts in 5 years, since No One to Depend On reached number 36 in 1972. Santana gave his cover of She’s Not There a prominent place in the set list on New Year’s Eve 1977, making it the penultimate tune of the show.

Our last 3 posts on New Year’s Eve all took place on December 31, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today, and all 3 are related. With each post, you’ll learn a little bit more about the connection between the 3. We’ll start with this show from Eddie Money, our inaugural post from the former Edward Mahoney from Brooklyn NY. Just days before he hit the stage at the Cow Palace for this show, he released his self-titled debut album, which went to #37 on the Billboard charts. The album contained what would become 2 of Eddie’s best known songs, Baby Hold On and Two Tickets To Paradise, which reached #11 and #22 respectively on the charts. (A side note - props to Eddie for his willingness to poke fun at himself in the Geico commercial where he owns a travel agency and makes travel arrangements by singing Two Tickets To Paradise.) One other song from the album also charted in the top 100, a cover of Smokey Robinson’s You Really Got A Hold On Me, which turns up as the 3rd song in Eddie’s Set on New Year’s Eve 1977.

The set includes Tuna’s take on San Francisco Bay Blue, n American folk song by Jesse Fuller that’s also been covered by such rock legends as Bob Dylan, Richie Havens, Eric Clapton, John Lennon and, Paul McCartney. One note - while this is a soundboard, the vocals are a bit low in the mix.

08. And We Bid You Good Night

I’m posting this soundboard featuring the Grateful Dead from December 29, 1968, 45 years ago today for 3 reasons:
  1. A few months back I posted some 1960s Dead and the response was so great, that I thought I should bring everyone another show from that era.
  2. The concert takes place at GulfStream Park Race Track, a site I’ve been to on several occasions in the last 5 years. Gulfstream has undergone a remarkable transformation, adding a casino, high end restaurants, a shopping village and taking on the look a feel of an upscale resort. Quite a contrast to the vibe of a Grateful Dead concert .
  3. In keeping with our December theme, the set list includes a cover of Turn On Your Lovelight, a song originally done by Bobby Blue Bland. The tune would be one of Pigpen’s signature songs, providing a rowdy, down and dirty bluesy contrast to the band’s psychedelic space trips on such songs as Dark Star and The Other One.
