Stones 1978 - Daily Double - #1: The mid 70's were not the best of years for "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World". The Stones' albums during that period had not lived up to the standard set by 1972's Exile on Main Street. Drug problems plagued Keith. Mick seemed more interested in the party life (he was a regular at Studio 54) than music. Mick Taylor quit the band. As the punk scene took a leading role on rock's stage, many depicted the Stones as decadent, aging millionaires and criticized their music as stagnant and/or irrelevant. All that changed in 1978. The band stuck back at their critics with a vengeance, releasing Some Girls in June of that year. That album, with songs such as Miss You, Beast of Burden and Shattered, was easily the best Stones album since Exile, and ranks as one of the finest of their career. Concurrent with the album's release, the Stones launched a brief 25 show US tour, which would run from June to July. This soundboard recording captures the band on July 6, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today, in Detroit.  Download this one, then come back on July 18 for the 2nd half of this Daily Double.

Our double plays from Eric Clapton this month features 2 shows from his 1985 tour. As mentioned in earlier posts of this blog, 1985 was a year in which EC returned to worldwide prominence. Working with Phi Collins, he released the album, Behind The Sun, in March 1985, which was a huge improvement of his previous effort, 1983’s Money and Cigarettes. It was also his first album after spending time in rehab for his addiction to alcohol. Fueled by the single Forever Man, which received extensive play both on radio and on MTV, Behind The Sun climbed into the top 40 on the Billboard charts. The album also yielded the single, She's Waiting, which was included as part of EC’s set at Live Aid in July 1985. That Live Aid appearance, which also included White Room and Layla, showed the world a healthy and rejuvenated Slowhand, who could still play with the best of them. This soundboard recording captures Clapton on Jul5, 1985, 29 years ago today, in Chicago. Download this one, then come back in 4 days for part 2 of our Double Play featuring EC in 1985.
