Led Zep 1977 - #2: As promised yesterday, here’s the 2nd post form Led Zep in 1977. This one lets me  recount my one failed attempt to go see Led Zep. A buddy of mine stood on line at Ticketron (any one remember Ticketron?) to get seats for 8 of us for Friday, June 8, 1977, 38 years ago today. It was the 2nd of 6 shows the band would be playing at Madison Square Garden. We failed, however, to pay attention to the 4 tickets per person limit, so he could only buy seats for 1/2 of us. We pulled names out of a hat, and true to my luck, I didn't get a ticket. The 4 guys who did go, however, complained that the show was a 60 minute drum solo with a couple of songs thrown in. They may have been right, as the whole 1977 US Tour, which was the last Led Zep did in the states, was plagued by problems, including lack of rehearsal time, drugs and violence. It all culminated with the cancellation of the the last 7 shows after the tragic death of Plant's 5 year old son. So, here's an excellent audience recording of the show I never saw, available for you to download and judge for yourself.

Rolling Stones - 1976-06-07 - Paris, France (SBD)

Stones 1976 - #1: On April 23, 1976, The Rolling Stones released Black & Blue, their first studio album in 2 years. The disc had originally been intended for release in 1975 prior to the Stone’s tour of North America, but was delayed as the band auditioned a variety of guitarists to take the place of Mick Taylor. The candidates included Steve Marriott, Harvey Mandel, Wayne Perkins, and even Peter Frampton, but in the end, The Stones chose Ronnie Wood. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts in the US and took the #2 spot in the UK. The first single from Black & Blue, Fool To Cry, climbed to #10 on the Billboard charts. Critical reviews were mixed, however, as Robert Christgau gave the record an A-, but Lester Bangs claimed that Black and Blue was “the first meaningless Rolling Stones album.” The band launched a European tour on April 28 in support of the disc, playing 41 shows in 2 months. This soundboard recording captures the Stones near the end of the tour, on June7, 1976, 39 years ago today.
