Despite having seen the Dead more times than I can count, I actually didn’t attend a single Dead show in 1982. I was in grad school at the time, working on my MBA, with lots of night classes so I couldn't catch many concerts that year. In any event, I don't have much first hand knowledge of the Dead from that year, but I do know that they debuted a host of new tunes, such as Throwin' Stones, Touch Of Grey, and West LA Fade Away which would eventually comprise their only top 10 album, In The Dark, which wouldn't be released until 1987, 5 years later! I also know that two of my good on line music buddies, AZ Jones, and Wolfclan, highly recommend 1982 as a really fine year for the band. This soundboard recordingis from December 31, 1982, 33 years ago today, is proof of why, as it features the Dead in fine form, including a spectacular 3rd set with Etta James and the Tower of Power horns!

In June 1965, the band The Them, fronted by Van Morrison, released their debut album. Morrison released his first solo album, Blowin' Your Mind!, two years later in September 1967. Since them, its been an almost 5 decade odyssey for Van the Man, a journey into the heart and soul of music, combining the Irish mysticism of his heritage with a quest for spiritual transcendence, coupled with traditional blues, rock and country influences. Beholden to no singular style but always true to himself, Van has both mesmerized ad baffled his fans and critics, but in the end, the music truly does soothe one’s soul. This Hq Audience recording captures Van the Man on December 31, 1996, 19 years ago today,in Sunrise Fl.  Van plays a number of tunes off his 1995 album, Days Like This, reaches back for some classics such as Moondance, Into The Mystic and Tupelo Honey, and even ends the night with Auld Lang Syne!

Gov't Mule - 1994-12-31 - Athens GA (SBD)

In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures The Mule about 10 months prior to the release of that disc, on December 31, 1994, 12 years ago today, in Athes, GA.

Dave Mason - 1975-12-31 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

Dave Mason has played with both Traffic and Fleetwood Mac, in addition to having a successful solo career. After leaving Traffic in 1969, Mason released a solo album every year from 1970 through 1975. His best charting single during that period was Only You Know and I Know, which hit Number 42 on the Billboard charts in 1970. His biggest success, however, would come in 1977, with the release of the album Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. This FM recording, however, is from before that run of hist, as it features Mason on December 31, 1975, 4 decades ago today, from the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Maybe that's why the set list features only a few of his solo tracks and is dominated by tunes from his days with Traffic.

Founded on the Bowery in New York City in 1973, CBGB was originally intended to feature its namesake (country, country, bluegrass, and blues) musical styles, but became a forum for American punk and new wave bands like the Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Misfits, Television, Patti Smith Group, The Dead Boys, The Dictators, The Cramps, and Joan Jett. That tradition continued until 2006, when the club finally closed its doors. This high quality audience recording comes from the club’s 2oth anniversary show, on December 30, 1993, 22 years ago today, and captures set from one of this blog's favorite artists, the one and only Marshall Crenshaw.
