As has become tradition here at So ManY Roads, our last show on new year's Eve, and the last show of the year, features the one and only Grateful Dead.  of course, its a logical choice since the Dead played 22 times on New Year's Eve between 1966 and 1991, skipping only 1967, 1973, 1974, and 1975.  (Note - Jerry Garcia sat in with the Allmans on New Year's Eve 1973 and played a solo gig on December 31, 1975, so he only skipped 2 years!).  Since we featured some great shows from 1971 earlier this month, we decided to stick with that year, and bring you this soundboard recording from December 31, 1971, 45 years ago today!

For our 2nd New Year's Ever post today, we bring you a soundboard recording from elvis Costello at the Palladium in New York on December 31, 1981, 32 years ago today! Costello had actually released 2 albums that year, Trust in January and Almost Blue in May.  While the first disc reflected many of the punk, new wave and power pop sensibilities of his earlier work, the latter album was a complete departure from previous form.  Almost Blue consisted entirely of country covers, including works originally written by Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Gram Parsons.  It was just one of the many twists and turns, emcompassing various musical styles, in the careerof teh man born Declan Patrick Aloysius Macmanus.

Hall and Oates have always been part of a musical style known as "blue eyed soul", a term coined in the 1960s to describe R&B and soul music played by white artists. such bands often played songs recorded in a style similar to music found on the predominantly black Motown and Stax labels.  Little wonder then, that during the New Year's Eve 1978 concert, 338 years ago today in Pittsburgh, Hall and Oates performed a cover of The Temptation's number one single from 1965, My Girl.

Bruce Springsteen - 1975-12-30 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD)

For Bruce Springsteen, 1975 was the year that vaulted him from NJ Rocker to Nationwide Superstar. The release of the album Born To Run, and his legendary live shows hows in August at the Bottom Line in New York, took him from the front page of the Asbury Park Press to the covers of Newsweek and Time.  Springsteen finished that historic year with 4 shows at The Tower Theater In Philadelphia, just across the river from New Jersey.  The New year's Eve show from that run has been officially leased while, a few years ago, we posted a soundboard from night 2 on December 28.  Today we bring you a soundboard of night 3, on December 30, 1975, 41 years ago today. One note - this one is NOT officially released. A check of the Springsteen site shows its the next night that you can purchase!

Just 6 days after his 1996 Christmas Jam solo concert, Warren Haynes was back with Gov’t Mule for a concert on December 29, 1996, 17 years ago today, from Philadelphia PA. As 1979 came to a close, a host of rock superstars came together for a 4 nigh series of concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London to raise money for the victims of war-torn Cambodia. The 4 shows, entitled The Concerts For The People OF Kampuchea,, featured the following acts:

• December 26: Queen
• December 27: Ian Dury, Matumba and The Clash
• December 28: The Specials, The Pretenders and The Who
• December 29: Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Paul McCartney & Wings 

A double album featuring highlights from the concert was released in 1981, but due to a host of record company issues, has never been released in any digital format. That said, today we have some highlights of from The Clash's set from the 2nd show, on December 27, 1979, 37 years ago today, which were not included on the album when released.
