As 1979 came to a close, a host of rock superstars came together for a 4 nigh series of concerts at the
Hammersmith Odeon in London to raise money for the victims of war-torn
Cambodia. The 4 shows, entitled The Concerts For The People OF Kampuchea,, featured the following acts:
- December 26: Queen
- December 27: Ian Dury, Matumba and The Clash
- December 28: The Specials, The Pretenders and The Who
- December 29: Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Paul McCartney & Wings
A double album featuring highlights from the concert was released in
1981, but due to a host of record company issues, has never been
released in any digital format. That said, today we have some highlights of from The Clash's set from the 2nd show, on December 27, 1979, 37 years ago today, which were not included on the album when released. i was lucky enough to go to all of these shows, the queen one was the best for me as it was just them for nearly 2 hours, the ian dury one was ok but i had seen him much better before, the who was a great show apart from the fact that they didn't get on until well into the evening and finished at nearly 30 minutes passed midnight by which time a lot of people had left who had to catch the last bus or train that was running at that time, the specials, suprisingly good as were the pretenders, apart from the bass player who couldn't hear he was out of tune most of the night! elvis, a lot of energy,Rockpile always delivered and macca was macca at least i got to see Bonham in what would be one of his last shows on british soil as part of the rock orchestra, and also it's been good to revisit on youtube as they seem to be popping up on there a lot
