U2 - 1985-02-05 - Bologna, Italy (SBD)

1985 - Live Aid on July 13, 1985 was a coming out party for U2. Their performance that day established them as a preeminent live group for the first time — something for which they would eventually become superstars. The band played a 14-minute rendition of "Bad", during which Bono jumped off the stage to join the crowd and dance with a girl. Twenty years later, in July 2005, the girl that he danced with revealed that he actually saved her life at the time. She was being crushed as the crowd pushed forwards. Bono saw her plight, and gestured at the ushers to help her. They didn't understand what he was saying, so he jumped down to help her himself.  Bono, Edge and U2 have remained in the spotlight ever since that transcendent Live Aid performance. They continue to create amazing music and have taken active roles on political and social issues.  This show, however, from February 5, 1985, 32 years ago this very day, catches the band on the edge of stardom. It takes place less than 5 months before Live Aid, but you can hear the same electricity in their performance that the whole world would soon experience.

I know that it can be frustrating to try and download a show, only to find the host doesn't work for you, or is extremely slow.

That said, I simply do not have the time to upload shows to multiple hosts, or split folders into smaller pieces to take advantage of some of the faster hosts. And I simply can't spend the money plan to pay for faster access or more storage space.

So, here's how we are handling all uploads:

• Any show under 200 mb goes up on zippyshare. 
• Anything between 200 and 300 goes on sendspace. 
• Anything over 300 goes on filefactory   

Is it a perfect system? No. But given the fact I have a life beyond this blog, it's the best I can do. Those 3 hosts work for me and are free. I apologize in advance if you have some issues with certain shows, but it's simply impossible to provide universal access to every show given technology and time constraints.

Robert Plant - 1988-02-03 - London UK (SBD)

1988 - In February 1988, Robert Plant released his 4th solo album, entitled Now and Zen. The disc went to #6 on the Billboard charts in the  US and  climbed to #10 in the UK, The album would eventually be certified triple platinum.  In several ways, Now and Zen marked a return to Plant's time with led Zeppelin.  First, the disc integrated the blues into numerous tracks, unlike his prior solo album.  Second, Plant actually sampled several Zeppelin songs including Whole Lotta Love, Dazed and Confused, and Black Dog.  Finally, former Led Zep guitarist played on 2 tracks on Now and Zen, Heaven Knows and Tall Cool One.  This soundboard recording captures Plant a few weeks before the release of Now and Zen, at the Marquee Club in London on February 3, 1988, 29 years ago today, playing a small gig to preview several of the tracks from the upcoming disc.

Sting - 1988-02-02 - Philadelphia PA (HQ Aud)

1988 - In October 1987, Sting released his 2nd solo album entitled Nothing Like The Sun. The disc went to #9 in the US, propelled to that spot by the single, We’ll Be Together, which rose to the #7 position on the Billboard charts. The album did even better in other parts of the world, reaching the #1 position, for example, in the UK, Japan and Italy, as well as climbing to the #3 spot in France, Canada, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to We’ll Be Together, the album spawned 2 other top 100 singles in the US, Englishman in New York which charted at #84 and Be Still My Beating Heart, which rose to the #15 position. The album was inspired by 2 tragic events in Sting’s life - the death of his mother and the civil oppression in Latin America that he had witnessed while participating in a 1986 Amnesty International tour. The somber tone of the album, however, did not stop it from becoming Sting’s best selling disc worldwide, with sales of over 11 million copies. This high quality audience recording captures Sting on Tour in support of Nothing Like the Sun in Philadelphia on February 2, 1988. 29 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1981-02-01 - Berkeley CA (SBD)

1981 - According to the blog Lost Live Dead, The Keystone Berkeley was a sawdust covered dump in a sketchy area of town that sold overpriced, watered down beer to a crowd of doubtful lunatics who were never going to be employee of the month, if they even had jobs. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia, even after he and the Dead were selling millions of albums and selling out 80,000 seat stadiums, continued to play the Keystone. In fact, according to the blog Jerry Garcia’s Brokedown Palaces, he played the Keystone at least 206 times between 1971 and 1984. Garcia shows at the Keystone almost never sold tickets in advance. Rather, they were available day of show only, first come, first serve for in a venue that officially held about 500 people Usually, Jerry didn’t come on stage until after 11:00 pm and shows ran right up until 2:00 am - last call - making for very late weeknights for those in attendance. My guess is lots of folks called in sick to work or school the next day. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Jerry from the Keystone, on February 2 1981, 3 dozen years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen – 1998-01-31 – Red Bank, NJ (SBD)

1990s - #5: This Bruce Springsteen post is a bit unique because it began as a Bon Jovi benefit show, but transformed into a Springsteen tour de force. The "Come Together: Jon Bon Jovi & Friends" benefit concert was organized by the Long Branch Police Department, The Asbury Park Press, and FPI Concerts, along with Jon Bon Jovi. The concert, held January 31, 1998, 19 years ago today, in Red Bank NJ, was held to honor slain Long Branch police officer Sgt. Patrick King and raise money for the Sgt. Patrick King Memorial Fund to provide for his family. King, a 45-year-old father of two young boys, was fatally shot on November 20, 1997 by a fugitive who had vowed to kill himself and a police officer rather than be captured and returned to jail. Some 20 musicians with ties to the Jersey shore music scene answered Jon Bon Jovi's call, including Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa Clarence Clemons, Danni Frederici, Little Steven, Max Weinberg, Southside Johnny, Bobby Bandiera, and Richie Sambora, just to name a few. Actor Danny DeVito was the event's MC. Amidst all that star power, Bruce shone brightest, spending the entire show on stage. The concert was Bruce’s first full-length electric gig following his acoustic The Ghost Of Tom Joad solo tour. Moreover, it put him back together with members of the E Street Band, foreshadowing their reunion tour which would finally occur in 1999.
