As I've mentioned on this blog, my wife and I took our twin boys to their first concert on Father's Day 2015 - Sir Paul McCartney at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  To say they had a good time would  be an understatement. So, when he scheduled a show at MetLife Stadium on August 7, 2016, a year ago today, they begged me to get tickets.  We did and Macca Round 2 was just as good as the first show. And very touching for all of us as well - you see it would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday had he not passed away in 2012. Sir Paul must have know because he played Birthday during the encores, the first time I ever heard him play it live! I've provided you 3 different tapes of this show in the download, and all sound good but I think the 3rd one (PM16NJ) sounds the best.  Enjoy. And oh by the way - at my boy's request we are going to see McCartney again next month on September 15 at Madison Square Garden!

In 2008, Elvis Costello launched a television series entitled Spectacle, which featured him interviewing and playing alongside a host of musical guests. This episode, as captured in this TV Soundboard recording from August 6, 2008, 9 years ago today featured Smokey Robinson, and was taped at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem in New York City.

Bruce Springsteen - 1978-08-05 - Louisville, KY (SBD)

On May 23, 1978, Bruce Springsteen launched a 115 show tour that would last through the end of the year in support of his new album, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, which was released on June 2. Darkness was Springsteen’s first disc since Born To Run In 1975; the 3 years wait the result of a legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel. All 10 songs from the album found their way into the Bruce’s set list at some point during the tour, with Badlands taking the prominent role of show opener. Perhaps the long wait for the album had increased the level of emotion among Bruce’s loyal fans, as the shows on this tour are often described as intense. Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh wrote, for example, “The screaming intensity of those '78 shows are part of rock and roll legend in the same way as Dylan's 1966 shows with the Band, the Rolling Stones' tours of 1969 and 1972, and the Who's Tommy tour of 1969: benchmarks of an era.” This soundboard recording captures Bruce during that historic tour on August 5, 1978, 3 39 years ago today in Louisville.

Billy Joel - 2015-08-04 - Uniondale, NY (HQ Aud)

This high quality audience tape captures Billy playing the final concert at the Nassau Coliseum, on August 4, 20156, just 2 years ago today.  He gets some help midway through the show from another native New Yorker, Paul Simon. As the Coliseum had the worst acoustics and sight lines of arena in the NY/NJ area, and was found to be filled with asbestos, they couldn't tear it down soon enough from my perspective.  They've since built a new arena on the site, and fittingly, Joel played the first concert in their new venue!

The Everly Brothers - 1969-08-03 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, The Everly Brothers (Phil & Don) had  three #1 singles - Wake Up Littel Suzie, All I have To Do Is Dream and Cathy's Clown - and another 3 that went to #2 - Bye Bye Love, Bird Dog and problems. Their vocal harmonies and dual acoustic guitar stylings influenced artists such as The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles. In 2003-2004, The Everlys toured with Simon & Garfunkel, joining Paul and Art on stage for several songs midway through each show. McCartney referenced the duo in his hit Let Em' In, listing Phil and Don among the numerous folks knocking on the door. This soundboard recording captures The Everly Brothers at The Fillmore West on August 3, 1969, 4 dozen years ago today.

The Police - 1983-08-02 - Montreal, Canada (FM) 

In August 1983, The Police just might have been the biggest rock act in the world. Two months earlier, on June 1, The Police released the album Synchronicity, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts, selling 8 million copies. The disc yielded 4 top 20 singles - Synchronicity II at #16, Wrapped Around Your Finger at #8, King of Pain at #3 and Every Breath You Take, which like the album, climbed all the way to #1. When the band toured in 1983/84 in support of Synchronicity, they found they could fill 50,000 seat stadiums such as Shea in New York, the same venue the Beatles had filled some 2 decades prior. As a result, perhaps the band felt they had no more mountains to climb, as soon after, they would disband, spurred on in part by Sting's decision to release a solo disc. This soundboard recording captures the band on their final tour until the 21st century, on August 2, 1983, 34 years ago today, in Montreal.

Warren Haynes - 2016-08-01 - Morrison, CO (SBD)

Today would have been Jerry Garcia's 75th birthday if we hadn't lost him way too soon in 1995. Jerry was part of an incredible contingent of musicians born in 1942 who shaped rock and roll in the 1960s, including Roger McGuinn, Lou Reed, Leon Russell, Brian Jones, Graham Nash, Dave Clark, Clarence Clemons, Marty Balin, Mick Fleetwood,  Brian Wilson, Jimii Hendrix and Paul McCartney. Years ending in 7, like this one, always seemed to be special for Garcia:

• In 1967, when he turned 25, the Grateful Dead released their debut album and played Monterey Pop
• In 1977, when he turned 35, the Dead had perhaps their greatest year of live performances, including the legendary Barton Hall show on 5/8/1977
• In 1987, when he turned 45, he literally rose from the dead, overcoming a diabetic coma to go back out on the road for what was a love fest between him and the Deadheads

We can think of no better way to honor Jerry today than by bringing you a soundboard recording Warren Haynes performing a Jerry Garcia Symphonic celebration from Red Rocks on August 1, 2016, a year ago this very day.  We still miss you Jerry and "love you more than words can tell.".
