1981 - It was Tuesday, November 24, 1981, just 2 days prior to Thanksgiving. I was in grad school, and had no Wednesday classes. Two of my buddies, who I had known since junior high, had taken the Wednesday off from work. So, we were clear for a big night out. We decided to head off to a club in Passaic called Hitsville to see if we could catch this "new wave" band called U2 that seemed to be getting lots of radio airplay. The band was supposed to take the stage around midnight. By 1 am, we'd been at the club 4 hours, had drank way too much, and there was still no U2. Finally, at 1:30 am, we called it a night, never getting to see the band. I'm not sure if they ever played. If you go here, you'll find a comprehensive list of U2 concerts and set lists. Please note that the 11-24-1981 Hitsville show is one of just a few with no set list published! If the band did eventually go on, it doesn't look like anyone was left to hear what they played! In any event, I may have missed U2 that night, but fortunately we have this FM broadcast from 10 days earlier in Boston, fro, November 14, 1981, 3 dozen years ago today to give us a peak into one of rock's legendary bands just as they were on the cusp of stardom.

The Holmes Brothers - 1997-11-14 - Lucerne, Switzerland (SBD)

1997: If you look at the page on this blog where I list all the concerts I've attended, you won't see any mention of the Fabulous Holmes Brothers. That's because I saw them so many times, at so many different blues clubs in New York in the late 1980s that I lost count. For those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk."  This soundboard recording captures the Holmes Brothers in Switzerland, on November 11, 1997, 2 decades ago this very day.

The Who - 2008-11-13 - Osaka, Japan (Ex Aud)

2008:  In late 2008, The Who launched a brief tour that would take them to the US, Japan and Australia, playing 28 shows on 4 continents before it concluded in March 2009.  The set list for these shows was basically a greatest hits list, as the band was not touring in support of a new album.  the Japanese oleg of the tour opened in Osaka, on November 13, 2008, 9 years ago today, as captured in this excellent audience recording.

Paul Simon - 2011-11-13 - Rosemont, IL (FM)

2011: On April 8, 2011, Paul Simon released his 12th solo studi album, entitled So Beautiful or So What. The disc debuted at #4 on the billboard charts, selling almost 70,000 copies in its first week. The disc also received critical acclaim, with Allmusic giving it 4 ½ star review, while Robert Christgau gave it a grade of A. In addition, Rolling Stone ranked it #3 on its list of the 50 best albums of 2011. Simon went on tour from April to July in support of the album, then after a 2 month break, went back out on the road from October to December. This FM broadcast captures him in Rosemont, IL on November 13, 2011, 6 years ago today. Download this one to hear Simon play not only tunes from his new disc, but also a retrospective of songs from is long storied career.

Bruce Springsteen - 2009-11-13 - Auburn Hills, MI (IEM SBD)

2009: On April 1. 2009, Bruce Springsteen launched the Working On A Dream tour, the title taken from his album released in January of that year. Yet, despite the title, the tour featured very little material from the new disc. Instead the set list and themes were more comparable to the Magic tour from a year earlier, including a focus on current topics such as the great recession. Overall the tour was a critical and commercial success, but its conclusion would have a sad aftermath. The tour would be Bruce’s last with Clarence Clemons at his side, as the saxophonist would pass away in 2011. This IEM matrix recording captures Bruce & The E-Streeters on November 12, 2009, 8 years ago today, in Auburn Hills. The set list includes bruce playing the entire Born To Run album live.

George Harrison - 1974-11-12 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

1974: On November 2, 1974, George Harrison launched a major North American tour, becoming the first Beatle to tour solo on that continent! Billed As George Harrison and Friends, the concerts included segments by Tom Scott, Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar. Unfortunately for George, the tour was problematic, to say the least. The former Beatle had blown out his voice completing the soon to be released album Dark Horse. He had vocal problems at many of the concerts, leading some critics to dub the shows the "Dark HOARSE" tour. Many fans also had issues with the concerts, growing weary of the long segments performed by Ravi Shankar. In addition, fans disliked that Harrison changed the lyrics and tempo of many of his better known songs, while leaving the classic Here Comes The Sun completely off the set list. All that said, this tour still holds a unique place in rock history, as it was the only time George toured in the US. Rumors abound that a formal release of film footage and concert tracks from that tour is in the works, but all that is still speculation. In the meantime, we'll have to make due with bootlegs from the tour. This post includes the only known soundboard recording from the tour, from November 12, 1974 in Los Angeles, 43 years ago today! Neil Young - 2007-11-12 - Chicago, IL (HQ Aud)

2007: In October 2007, Neil Young launched his 2007 Chrome Dreams Continental Tour, in support of his Chrome Dreams II album. That disc was a follow up to his 1977 Chrome Dreams album. Just one slight catch - the original Chrome Dreams album was never released! Neil scrapped that disc in favor of releasing the album American Stars & Bars. Many tracks scheduled for Chrome Dreams eventually showed up on American Stars & Bars as well as on Rust Never Sleeps. In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Neil in Chicago during that tour on November 12, 2007, a decade ago today.
