Bob Weir’s solo efforts have included successful stints with Kingfish along with a wonderful pairing with bassist Rob Wasserman in Ratdog. A somewhat unusual chapter, however, was written in the early 1980s when he fronted Bobby & The Midnites. The Midnites originally included Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead on keyboards, Matthew Kelly from Kingfish on guitar, Bobby Cochran from Steppenwolf on guitar, Tim Bogert from the Vanilla Fudge on bass and Billy Cobham, who had played with Miles Davis, on drums. Despite the star studded lineup, their self titled debut album made little commercial or critical impact. In 1982, Kelly, Mydland and Bogert left the band. Weir recruited Alphonso Johnson of Weather Report to take over on bass and added Dave Garland on keyboards. That lineup lasted until March 1983, when Johnson was replaced by Kennu Gradny on bass. This FM broadcast captures the final Midnites' lineup at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ on June 12, 1983, 35 years ago today.

When The Pretenders hit the stage in Stockholm on June 10, 1980, 38 years ago today, their debut album had already been met by overwhelming commercial and critical success. The disc reached #1 on the charts in the UK and climbed to #9 on The Billboard charts in the US. Famed rock critic Robert Christgau gave the disc an A- rating while Rolling Stone wrote that the album “stands as some of the freshest, most provocative music around right now.” This FM broadcast captures the raw, early days of The Pretenders, at a time when New Wave and Punk bands were beginning to usurp the position of many of the clasic rock acts of the 1960s and 1970s.

Rock Influences - 1984-06-09 - Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ (FM)

The launch of MTv in August 1981 revolutionized the music industry. Suddenly, folks were not just listening to their favorite music but hey were watching it. " I Want My MTv" became such a well known catch phrase that Dire Straits incorporated it into their classic track, Money For Nothing, inviting Sting to sing that line as part of the tune's coda. Videos went from simple tapes of a band playing a tune live to elaborate, mini movies costing millions to produce. While MTv in its easrly days primarily featured punk and new wave music, mainstream rock soon became part of the rotation. In addition, the station grew beyond videos, developing original programming such as Unplugged, the MTV Video Music Awards and Rock Influences. Launched in 1984, rock influences took a look at a current band or artist  by examining how ,they were influenced by the  prior generation of musicians.  The show featured live performances, usually filmed at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ, by both the current act and its influences. When REM performed at the Capitol on June 9, 1984, 44 years ago today, their rock influences, served as the opening act. This FM broadcast captures their opening set in its entirety, featuring tunes from John Sebastian, Richie Havens, Roger McGuinn, Jesses Colin Young and The Band!

In August 1983, Billy Joel released the album, An Innocent Man, on which each tune paid homage to the music of the late 50’s and early 60’s from artists such as Frankie Valli, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Smokey Robinson and The Supremes, just to name a few. The disc was also one of Joel’s most successful, climbing to #4 on the Billboard charts and being nominated for a Grammy for album of the year. An Innocent Man spawned 3 top ten singles - the title track at # 10, Uptown Girl at #3 and Tell Her About It which reached the top of the charts. Three other singles, The Longest Time, Leave a Tender Moment Alone and Keeping the Faith all made the top 20 on the Billboard charts. In January 1984, Joel launched a 6 month tour in support of the album. In June, he played 3 shows at Wembley Arena in London. The album had done even better in the UK than in the US, rising to the #2 spot on the British charts, with the single Uptown Girl hitting #1 across the pond. The Alarm - 1984-06-07 - Lyon, France (FM)

When they released of their self titled debut album in July 1983, and served as the lead in for U2 that same summer, The Alarm were quickly heralded as perhaps the next "big thing". The similarities in their style to that io U2 brought on the inevitable comparisons, which may have been simply unfair to a band just starting out. In any event, The Alarm never quite reached the heights U2 did, but they most certainly produced some fine tunes, including The Stand, 68 Guns and Rain In The Summertime (my favorite), just to name a few. This FM broadcast captures The Alarm during their rapid rise, on June 7, 1984, 34 years ago today, in France.

In May 1987, David Bowie launched The Glass Spider Tour in support of his album Never Let Me Down. Bowie conceived the tour as a theatrical show, and included spoken-word introductions to some songs, vignettes, and employed visuals including projected videos, theatrical lighting and stage props. On stage, Bowie was joined by guitarist Peter Frampton and a troupe of five dancers, choreographed by long-time Bowie collaborator Toni Basil (Yep that Toni Basil of “Oh Mickey You’re So Fine” fame) With the theme "Rock stars vs Reality," the show was divided into two acts and an encore. Bowie and Frampton had been friends since their teen years, and the guitarist saw the tour as an opportunity to stay in the background and do what he loved best - play guitar! This soundboard recording captures Bowie on June 6, 1987, 31 years ago today, in  Berlin.`

Marshall Crenshaw - 1982-06-05 - Berkeley CA (FM)

In April 1982, Marshall Crenshaw released his self-titled debut album. I bought it on the advice of a buddy, who had heard about Crenshaw on WBCN-FM, while attending college up in Massachusetts. The disc went on my turntable and rarely came off! Little wonder since esteemed rock critic Robert Christgau rated the album an A, while Rolling Stone gave it 4 stars.Why Marshall Crenshaw never took rock by storm is beyond me. The album has everything – catchy tunes, great hooks, excellent vocals, and Beatle and Buddy Holly influences (FYI - Crenshaw played John Lennon in an off-Broadway production of Beatlemania and portrayed Buddy Holly in the movie, La Bamba). Songs such as Cynical Girl, Someday Someway, and Rocking Around in NYC get in your head, grab you and never let go. Yet, while he received critical acclaim, super stardom never followed. This FM broadcast captures Crenshaw on tour in support of his debut album on June 5, 1982, 3 dozen years ago today, in Berkeley.
