Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1990-08-10 - Columbia MD (SBD)

In June 1990, Crosby, Stills and Nash released Live It Up, the trio's first album since their 1982 top 10 disc, Daylight Again (note - 1988's American Dream album was a CSNY recording). The album had been recorded over a period of 4 years, from February 1986 to February 1990. Time invested, however, clearly did not equate to music quality in this case, as Live It Up became the band's worst selling album up to that point in their career. Critical reviews were just as bad, with the All Music Guide, for example, giving the disc just on and a half stars. Perhaps the band also knew that Live it Up was not their best work. While they launched a tour in support of the album, only 4 songs from the disc - the title track, If Anybody Had A Heart, Yours and Mine and Got To Keep Open - made it into the set list. Despite the weakness of their new material, CSN still put on a fine show, drawing from their wealth of earlier classics, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from their concert in Columbia, MD on August 10, 1990, 28 years ago today. Download this one, listen to the new tunes at your own risk, and enjoy masterpieces such as Love The One Your With, Woodstock, Our House and Wooden Ships. That said, one CSN staple, Teach Your Children, is conspicuous by its absence, making this set list unique in that regard.

In 1982, Joe Jackson, once one of the 3 Angry Young Men (along with Graham Parker and Elvis Costello) of the new wave movement, surprised everyone with an album that paid tribute to the legendary Cole Porter, Night and Day went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the top 10 single, Stepping Out. This soundboard recording captures Jackson on tour in support of Night and Day on August 8, 1982, 3 dozen years ago today.

Never forget that when the Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Robert Hunter, the group’s long time lyricist, was included as part of the band!  This soundboard captures Hunter in Camden  on August 7,  2004, 14 years ago today.

In many ways, the story of The Eagles, prior to the death of Glenn Frey, is the story of 2 different bands – the pre and post Joe Walsh editions, both of which were tremendously successful. The pre-Walsh band created a string of hits songs such as Desperado, All Ready Gone, Tequila Sunrise, and Take It Easy. In fact, the album, Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) is the largest selling disc in US history. The post Walsh band produced the album, Hotel California, which is also among the top 20 best selling albums of all time. The single by the same name is consistently picked by radio listeners as one of the 10 best rock songs ever. Walsh joined The Eagles in December 1975, and instantly added a harder, less country, edge to their sound. This soundboard recording from Seattle from August 6, 1976, 42 years ago this very day, captures the band right at the crossroads of their transition. Joe Walsh had joined the band as of December 1975, but Hotel California would not be released until December 1976. Crosby & Nash - 1995-08-05 - Santa Cruz, CA (FM) 

David Crosby and Graham Nash always seemed an unlikely pairing yet somehow it magically worked. After all, Crosby was born in Los Angeles, and emerged from The Byrds, a band steeped in folk rock, but which, thanks to Crosby, also helped influence what we today call psychedelic rock. Nash was born in Blackpool, England, and was pivotal in the forging the pop sound of the Hollies. Despite their differences, Crosby and Nash understood the musical power of perfectly blended harmonies, as evident on such tunes as Wind on The Water/To The Last Whale. They also shared a common belief that music could make a difference in politics and world events. Songs such as Long Time Gone, Chicago, Military Madness, Almost Cut My Hair and Immigration Man reflected the duo’s sense of political activism. This soundboard recording captures the duo on August 5, 1995, 23 years ago this very day, in Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, the duo has drifted apart in recent years, and it appears there is little hope for a reunion between them or with Stephen Stills or Neil Young.
